Utorrent slows down your web browsing ie firefox
I have been suffering with this for ages. Utorrent killed all browsing potential.
Found solution here http://forum.utorrent.com/viewtopic.php?id=15992

Quote:
- COMMON PROCEDURES (reiterated just to be sure)
- Restart µTorrent, your computer, modem, and/or router after performing any of the suggestions below
- Try lowering net.max_halfopen to 8 or lower (Can be found in Preferences > Advanced)
- Try disabling IP resolving in the Peers tab's context menu
- Try disabling DHT (Can be found in Preferences > BitTorrent)
- Try disabling UPnP and NAT-PMP (Can be found in Preferences > Connection)
- Try disabling peer.resolve_country if it isn't already set to false (Can be found in Preferences > Advanced)
- Try lowering maximum global number of connections to 200? 100? 50? Lower? (Can be found in Preferences > BitTorrent)
- Try patching TCPIP.sys (Windows XP w/ SP2, Windows 2003 w/ SP1, or newer)? Windows Vista users can try this out, but no guarantees are made. Users not on Windows XP w/ SP2, Windows 2003 w/ SP1, Windows Vista, or newer can skip this step.
- Connect your computer directly to the modem to make sure the problem is not caused by the router
If none of this helps,
PROVIDE US WITH INFORMATION.

Is that solution limiting the number of torrents I can seed? Please respond. :)

Re: Utorrent slows down your web browsing ie firefox
Guys, what number of half-open connections you set in uTorrent after patching TCPIP.sys. At the moment my uTorrent client is set to 50 half-open connections of 252 available on my Windows 7.

The main thing that helped me was the patch.

I never see the slow down but it may because I use a Slipstream disk with Black Viper and other tweaks like Evillords open connections.
Funny as you can have three neighbours all using different IPS with different speed issues trying to solve the problem . Much appreciated Zed , this is a good start .

Re: Utorrent slows down your web browsing ie firefox
The latest alpha of uTorrent decreases torrent usage when you browse the pages. But it's still better to deleted finished torrents as soon your out/in traffic ratio is over 1.

It's called "uTP", and has been on the works since v1.8.

Yes, but it depends on the configuration of other parameters you have in Utorrent, and also what Other peers you are connected to.
One should patch TCP/IP and disable DHT, if you are using private trackers. Thats more than enough actually.

Yes, sort of. As you are limiting Upload Slots.

That's a myth. Please do a Google search for "BitTorrent private flag" and read the material you get.

Not really, you also need to set the right amount of maximum connections and limit your upload speed.

Re: Utorrent slows down your web browsing ie firefox
thanks for the help :) but i have a doubt if the bandwidth allocation (in utorrent) is made to high for a particular download, then does it cause the same problem with the web browser's ?
-
Re: Utorrent slows down your web browsing ie firefox
Anything that clogs a lot of bandwidth will slow network access down for the rest of your programs. However, as of this writing, uTorrent has uTP (a.k.a. bandwidth management) enabled by default. This means you should experience less lag even if leeching at full blast because speeds are automatically regulated.

Re: Utorrent slows down your web browsing ie firefox
I was experiencing slow web surfing on my iMac. After reading this thread, now I suspect that it is probablly because of bittorrent client on my mac. I will delete it from the machine and will see if it is going to make any difference.
Thanks, Pendu
