Need help picking out parts?
For those of you who are posting here to ask for some advice on system specs/parts on a new computer build please try as best you can to follow these guidelines:
Post a Budget and what type of currency you use
Post what the intended uses are for the computer
Post any things that you want in the build: Quad core/Video card type/required storage

Re: Need help picking out parts
"Diffusion-limited aggregation" is sooo yesterday.
All the cool kids moved on like years ago.
Good CAD workstation vid cards will eat your entire budget.
Back to Tim Horton's to rethink the specs.
-
Re: Need help picking out parts
OK reworked specs
How about something to like chat with twats on the internet?
Included minibar would be a big plus.

I'm sure it could be modified to work with Canadian beer.
Probably need a metric nozzle or something.

Looking at Dell's XPS 630.
Probably goin' to go quad-core @ 2.40 Ghz since that'll stack, 4 GB RAM, with Dual nVidia GeForce 9800 GT 512MB (stack again), but I'm not sure about the harddrive.
Any ya'll gots any advice ? :smilie4: Does 2 x 500 GB SATA mean that it's actually two seperate harddrives?

Re: Need help picking out parts
E8400, E8500, E8600
which one is better?
I read somewhere and they recommend E8400. it won 2 or 3 customer choice award
-
Re: Need help picking out parts
The early 8400's were overclocking monsters, easily hitting 4GHz without extreme voltage or cooling.
Later steppings are more hit or miss but still an almost guaranteed 3.6GHz.
There is no difference tween the 3 chips other than stock speed and I suspect that they are just binned brothers under the skin.
Probably go with the 8500- it's only $20 more than the 8400 and may clock a bit better.
The 8600 is way too expensive for what it is- at it's price point I'd start looking at quads.

Yeah man 2x500 means 2 500GB HDD's but it's in Raid 1 meaning what is written to one HD is automatically written to the other as a backup so it's only 500Gb total. Not sure what data burst cache it tho :idunno:I would not recommend a Dell. You can get a better cheaper rig other places, better yet build you own man, it's way easy and we could coach you through it no prob ;)
At the current specs this is over $1600 US DUDE don't pay that much. you can get the same system for around $1000 Thats a $600 + difference man!!!
Here is how I figured the parts in like 5 min.

You have warranties from each of the manufacturers.

Re: Need help picking out parts?
Budget- Unlimited
Use- SUPERHARDCORE NUTS GAMINg
main dilemma-
ATI 4870s crossfire(4X) or nvidia
MOtherboard
i7 or not?
-
Re: Need help picking out parts?
WOW sorry I didn't see this post. I'll come back in a bit with some spec suggestions ;)
I just saw that the budget is unlimited eh. Doesn't sound too serious. If it is unlimited though fuck it you go for the i7 and let us all know how it works out.
Get these
Intel Core i7 Extreme Edition 965
EVGA 132-BL-E758-A1 LGA 1366 Intel X58
and 2 of these
XFX GX280NZDDF GeForce GTX 280 XXX

Re: Need help picking out parts?
Looking at building a rig preliminarily for for mid to high-mid range gaming .
Budget $1500 to $2500 cdn(firm on the upper end)
Basically would like a comparison to see if the extra cash spent on i7/x58/DDR3 would be worth it at the moment.
Besides the obvious the main feature I'm looking for is a quality case with good air flow(it will be an air cooled machine)either steel or aluminum.
Not going to be extremely OC'ed btw.
Storage isn't important I've got lots of spare laying around that I can throw in.
-
Re: Need help picking out parts?
Nothing I've seen about the i7 platform convinces me that it's worth the premium over s775, especially when it comes to gaming.
The vid card(s)- and the supporting hardware...mainly PSU- are going to be the primary consideration.
The video cards are also going to be the main heatsource in the case, so attention to their cooling, whether stock or aftermarket, is going to be crucial.
I know little about video cards so someone else will have to advise you there.
Lots of cases will fit the bill but again, I've never left a case unmolested so my recommendations would be semi-useless.
Actually, I'm not much good to you at all today, am I?
-
Re: Need help picking out parts?
That's OK I appreciate that you took the time to not answer me.
If I stick with tried and true
Then I'm thinking http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128358
It supports up to DDR2 1333 but I've been told anything over 800 isn't worth the extra money?
I like G.Skill so any suggestions?
Also on cpu any point of getting anything better than the 8400(9550?)
If I'm not going i7 money basically isn't an issue but I don't want to throw it away either.
-
Re: Need help picking out parts?
Great motherboard.
This G.Skill.
The 8400 is a wonderful chip- especially if you're interested in clocking the snot out of it.
Since you're not, I'd go Q9550 (another great clocker, BTW) as it has great bang-for-the-buck and will do some things better than the dual core.
Now you're down to the vid card and case basically.
This case has been getting some great reviews.
-
Re: Need help picking out parts?
That's certainly a nice case .
The only thing that worries me is someone mentioned this in a review:
"The PCI/AGP slots are tight, and I mean super tight making adding cards a chore. I had to use some needle-nosed pliers on my vid and sound card to bend the metal prongs to just the right angle. I like a snug fit, but this was a little much".
I've been thinking about the Coolermaster HAF
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product...82E16811119160
but it's a little on the gaudy side .

Re: Need help picking out parts?
I like the flip-up USB ports alot dude. Still the Antec 900 is my personal fav, has anyone heard anything about the 900-V2 at all?

Re: Need help picking out parts?
did u already bought your comp, detale? if not i can suggest to buy good stuff right away than some hardware that is not so powerful cuz if u buy more older hardware u are soon after the development again :)

Re: Need help picking out parts?
Not sure if people still view this section of the board but I thought I would post anyway. I'm going to be looking myself but some other advice would be nice.
Budget ~$1000 CAD. OK if over a bit in price.
Looking for a gaming/work computer.
CPU: Intel i5 or i7
RAM: 8GB minimum required
Vid Card: Prefer NVIDIA
HD: 500GB is enough
+Standard DVD Drive
Don't need a monitor,keyboard,etc.
Thanks.:)

Re: Need help picking out parts?
I still pop in here. i'll check conversion rates to usd and be back in a lil bit. How much gaming do you do? Like to you want the highest end vid card or something with a reasonable price tag like the GTX 260 or what?
OK so here is an initial spec:
LG DVD Burner 27.99
COOLER MASTER Storm Scout 89.99
GIGABYTE GV-N26SO-896I GeForce GTX 260 204.99
CORSAIR CMPSU-650TX 99.00 (-20 rebate bringing it to $79)
G.SKILL 4GB X2 191.98
GIGABYTE GA-P55A-UD3 134.99
Intel Core i5-660 Clarkdale 3.33GHz 207.99
Grand total $957.92 USD ( Google conversion says "989.626648 Canadian dollars")
Not to mention you could always spend $200 extra and get this combo if you could live with dual Radeon HD 4860 cards Which seems fine to me even though I'm a Nvidia man myself ;)

Re: Need help picking out parts?
You do know there are 5770s about and whatnot, right?
-
Re: Need help picking out parts?
Shirley but he said he Prefers NVIDIA

The best advice I can give: If you decide on a list of products be It i5 or i7 stick to It.
I wasted about £250 to £300 on things I didn't need, or know anything about.
Do your research about what you want It may take a little longer, but you will safe money on things you won't need.

Re: Need help picking out parts?
Hello,
I want to get a PC, sick of my laptop.
Budget: 50,000 - 70,000 Yen (Basically 500-700 dollars)
Primary use is gaming. I don't need a hard drive as I have 4 satas.
Secondary use is for recording so I require a pretty decent sound card and firewire. (Separate to the budget listed above, just need a recommendation)
Your help would be very appreciated. :)

Re: Need help picking out parts?
Core i5 or cheap AMD processor (like the Athlon II X3 435).
For graphics, probably the HD 4850 or GTX260.

Re: Need help picking out parts?
Is there a way I can buy a usb 3.0 add on and add it onto my asus eee 1000he?

Re: Need help picking out parts?
Detale and others, what to do with $500/600?
A friend of mine, coming from the US, is going to bring me some hardware parts.
In brief, I need a new Mobo, processor and Memory kit and I don't have more then $600 to spend.
I'm checking prices at newegg.com
The parts I have:
- Tower Case;
- Corsair TX850W Power Supply;
- GeForce 9800GT;
- GeForce 8600GT (PhysX);
- Monitor (res:1920x1200);
Parts I want to change:
- Mobo M2N32-SLI Delux;
- AMD Athlon 64 X2 5200 (always running at stock 2.6 GHz);
- Memory: 2GB G.Skill (I never understood the timing things).
What I do:
- I play games but the config I have today is already "almost" enough for me.
- I work with Adobe appz (Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop).
- I'm thinking about start playing with AfterEffects too.
What I prefer:
- AMD!
- I love Asus Mobos. I would go with EVGA too, but it's Intel only and I think I don't have money for that.
- I have big problems to decide between memories (timings and compatibility) but I prefer Corsair or G.Skill.
edit: well, I had just a few hours to decide and I ended up getting the following config:
- ASUS Crosshair IV Formula AM3 AMD 890FX
- AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition Deneb 3.4GHz
- DDR3 4GB 1600MHz DUAL GT CORSAIR CMG4GX3M2A1600C7
I just have some doubts about the memories (if they will work with the mobo) and I'll be able to keep my video cards config (9800GT + 8600GT for phisyX) when the motherboard was made for crossfire config. =/
Thank you very much for your time!
