steve martin's the first that springs to mind
In chronological order, in my lifetime:
1-Lenny Bruce
2-Jonathan Winters
3-George Carlin (I didn't forget; while making my decisions earlier, I felt he was a bit too derivative of Lenny Bruce for inclusion on this list. I hereby change my mind.)
4-Richard Pryor
5-Robin Williams
6-Eddie Izzard
All others are pretenders to the throne, which is not to say there aren't a lot of great comedians out there-just that these six, to me, qualify as true geniuses. ;)
EDIT:added George Carlin
Bill Hicks. Rabid poet.
charlie chaplin
definetly the waynes brothers
An excellent list ( I am not familiar with Jonathon Winters work tho') - however I would addQuote:

Tony Hancock. East Cheam's most famous son.
Billy Connoly. The man who put the cnt back in Cntry and Western.
The genius part must surely involve an element of originality ( for his/her time). I think these people displayed it. As well as being feckin' funny.
ad to that list the great charlie chaplin and harold lloydQuote:

Did I mention JPaul?
I've been called a lot better.
I though we agreed on the arse thing JPaul. Not that it's all that bad in this context. Just watch those "nasty PM's right? :P
Balamm, Arse is a compliment where I come from.
It's even a verb.
But an arse is an arse, of carse of carse.
And no-one can talk to an arse, of course.
Unless, of course, the arse, of course, is the famous Mr Chailce.
If we are only allowed to name actors, then I would say leslie neilson, chevy chase, dan ackroyd, rick moranis, and steve martin.(spaceballs was funny) If we are allowed to name directors, writers, and producers I would have to say ethan and joel cohen(Oh brother where art thou)(Raising Arizona).
