Are you scared?

Hi

Seeing as I'm not worthy of posting in the BT Lounge and this topic interests me, I have no choice but to start a thread here for us great unwashed to discuss.

Is anyone else here scared that the world of BT may be coming to an end? With the closure of god knows how many sites all in the space of a few hours, surely the anti-piracy groups will be looking to play the same game in other countries like canada and the EU.

Even though I have only been affected by the possible closure of one Swedish site (SceneHD), I reckon this is how the anti-piracy organisations are going to try to bring down the whole of bittorrent. If the whole of the EU adopts IPRED type laws, it may not be a long time away that bit torrent is brought to it's knees.

I don't mind admitting, I'm worrying a bit. Should I be worried? Are you worried?

I predict that there will be nearly apocalyptic effects on the bittorrent world.

I'm not scared because there are other options and there will likely always be ways of downloading what I want.

There are some trackers out there that are led by knowledgable and responsible people. They will never go down. Noobs sites are being closed down, not a big deal.

yes apocalyptic - to a noob.

I am a little bit scared but not at all. Always will be something like tracker or whatever and we will be able to transfer the wanted data.

P.S. SceneHD is not a small tracker at all.

Even in the worst case senerio, its not like there aren't still countries with internet access that have very little or no internet laws yet. Until all the child porn and crap is completely removed from the net, I'm not worried because control of the internet is an illusion.

Not scared personally, and even less concerned that the 'bittorrent world (filesharing in general) is coming to an end'.

While losing all those trackers is definitely not good, even if I'm not affected personally, I'm rather confident that there will be new ones to replace them pretty soon, even in / from Sweden. In the last few months, quite a few really promising trackers have emerged, and I'm looking forward to see their communities grow.

Simple fact is, if the authorities cannot stop kiddy porn and other unsavoury sites, what chance have they got stopping file sharing, much of which is legitimate sharing.

Presumably, kiddie porn sites are very underground and secretive, whereas even private trackers are easily found on the first page(s) on google.

And to those bashing me for my prediction, I saw these recent events as inevitable too, so if I remember, I'll bump this thread when shit really hits the fan worldwide over the next year or two.

Rest assured that I personally won't bump the thread if it doesn't.

What about all those 'naturist' sites. They are not secritive or private, yet show underage girls, and AFAIK it is illegal. There are tons of sites with way more illegal crap then filesharing, and they haven't stopped any of it yet. The internet is still like the wild west.

I don't know if it was on Salon or somewhere else, but an article I read a few weeks ago mentioned such sites, which I've never seen myself. I'm pretty sure it mentioned that there used to be magazines like that and many sites at first, but most have been shut down, so I'm guessing that's a pretty fringe activity too and would certainly be illegal in the US and other countries (even a cartoon of Lisa Simpson naked was considered child porn in Australia). I'm sure there are such open public sites, but I wonder where they are hosted and how vulnerable they would appear if a politician or someone suddenly became aware of them and wanted it shut down.

You're right that these things exist, but my point is that they are in a precarious situation existing mainly on the fringe of the internet and legality. Bittorrent has thrust itself to the forefront in the last few years and I think we'll starting to see the effects of becoming so publicized.

It's just important to be aware that what we're doing is or probably could be construed as illegal and that the authorities are well aware of where we're doing it usually. I've read some comments at SceneHD that wondered how the authorities even knew about the place or how they had ever seen the inside. That kind of ignorance is rampant. A lesser form of this ignorance I've seen is the idea that only Kazaa users have really had legal issues, so those noobs are the ones who should worry. That overlooks the fact that the legal system takes a while to catch up to technological trends.

It's good isn't it? Think about when p2p networks go under threat there will always be security upgrades?

Wasn't TPB going to encrypt the whole of cyber space at one point?
