IIS is as simple as installing it from "add/ remove windows components" with the OS CD in the drive. The IIS admin snapin gives you all the config options. If you have front page, it makes setting up the web directory a little easier. If you want to add a simple index of files, Dirlist can be used for free for 30 days and builds a hyperlinked directory of file names. Just remove the directory path before you open the web so it isn't shown publicly, change page color or back ground, and you have a working website.
The important settings in IIS are headers/expire immediately, performance, limit connections, max CPU, enforce, check extensions, do not allow authoring.
The webserver that Livy was referring to can also be installed from Add/Remove Programs, why not try http://www.no-ip.org to host your website via HTTP, there was also a recommendation from BOT a while ago, but I'll see if I can search for it.
I think he's trying to setup his own server OS. A learning experience?
If that's it, then he better get busy and learn IIS. It's in how many billions of computers now?
All these other little programs will just confuse the process and clutter the OS. If it's a problem with the IP showing, register your IP with DynDns.org. and use a custom URL instead.
thx balamm
yeah IIS in win2k pro is a bitch but i'll get to it :D
and thx for the suggestion on the www.no-ip.org, already registered
well i dont use IIS for webpages
I wanna use http like ftp, where ppl can come in and download stuff (or upload from my computer)
ftp server is just too slow (10kbps in either direction) and requires login
You can setup annonymous access to ftp. It's a bit harder in win2k with all the patches though.
You're not going to get much speed from http in win2k either. On shaw, the best I get is about 50k now. Started at 100, then capped back to 80, falling, falling.
Try SQL. It's a bitch to figure out but I had someone uploading off me at 300k yesterday! Now if I could just find the SQL logs to see what they uoloaded....
Take a look here for IIS WIndows server setup
ok thx
BTW what's SQL?? :D
structured query language. Another protocol. If you have office XP with front page, there'll be some add ons that don't get installed even when you choose "complete". Very pricey add ons!!
Exchange and SQL server are installable from the CD folder. You'll have to do some serious reading on it though.
These are the desktop versions. For win2k advanced server, go to the windows server family home page and grab the full trial versions, 60 or 90 days I think but you should be able to extend that.
It's good to sign up for this stuff anyway so you get access to even more stuff from MS.
ok thx i'll try this if I have enuff time
