College Downloading

So im going off to college in the fall . . . in the states:drunk:

looking for advice about how to get my shit :blink: I know there have been similar threads but they're mostly directed at p2p. . .

I've learned to stay away from torrents and now I mostly use direct downloads (ie. megaupload etc.) and usenet once in a while

I realize that newsgroups are a must, especially with the SSL encryption, but im researching other ways to cover my ass:ninja:. I don't know if my university will be monitoring the use of direct downloads but I would prefer not to find out.

Is setting up a VPN, such as through HotSpot Shield a good idea? Or maybe should I try to sniff out a connection? (I really dont have any expertise in this area)

I would highly appreciate any advice you guys can contribute . . .so what ever you got though it at me, pleeze!

Ummm......it could be cheap.
If you happen to have some spare money, get a dedicated server[seedbox]. You can install utorrent/rtorrent/what-ever-torrent and some ftp server thus allowing you to use torrents and download the files though FTP [you can use encrypted connection]. ( Don't know why you learned to stay away from torrents... ) This way you only connect to your seedbox.

Well I got a warning from my isp for doing a torrent once, so that set me back permanently. . . sorry I'm really unfamiliar with the whole seedbox/torrent thing. But if ur doing a torrent through ftp are you still seeding? Anyways I heard private trackers are a real pain and you have to contribute all the time - I'm more of a pick and choose downloader and I wont be able to be spend much time messing too much with what ever is needed. Also it would be wise to stay away from any kind of uploading in college.

Depends where you want to leech from. It can vary from $0.00 to $100.00 month.

It's probably the best option for you. Usenet maybe cheaper.

could you go in more detail in how it works? I didn't see much about where the downloads come from or how they are downloaded and if there is any encryption

. . .and this is solely for movies right?

btw, that lifetime of free leeching does sound pretty appealing

No......what you will be doing is basically renting a 'computer' (server) from some company. Then you can install whatever torrent client you want as well as an FTP server. The client will download the files to your rented 'computer' and then you use FTP to download to your computer. That way your home/college computer wont need to worry about torrent problems.

For private trackers, yeah many require a ratio if you don't want to be banned. But, becuase you have now have a rented 'computer', that computer will do the downloading and sharing. ( Using a far superior connection than you might have at home. )
That way your college connection is not involved in any sharing, only downloading from an encrypted ftp connection. ^^

Well that all sounds really good, I still have to torrent once in a while for music I cannot find else where

Can you give some recommendations for affordable/reliable seedboxes. I heard some are located in counties where there are no copyright restrictions so the seeding would not affect me in any way. Also I would like one to which I could create a really secure connection so my isp and the admins would have absolutely no idea (more like proof) of what I was downloading.

Finally, what would you say is more secure/under the radar, SSL encrypted usenet or the secure ftp connection to a seedbox?

btw, what do you think is a safe amount of bandwidth to use over a certain amount of time? per day. per month, for example. And would it really matter? I'm sure there will lots of ppl who use up a ton of bandwidth for legit purposes such as playing games online or watching videos.

lol, bandwidth usage can vary greatly. On a college campus using too much might make you stand out.....though I am not sure. If you happen to get a seedbox, only what you download from it will be known to campus admins. I doubt that you will create trouble as long as you use your head a little.

You think downloading 40gb over the weekend would be a little suspicious?:lol:

I looked over the seedbox section and I think I got the hang of it. I haven't been a member for 30 days tho so I can't post in there or make pm's, which is unfourtunate because i have some free time right now to get everything figured out. You think it would be worthwhile to ask someone about this?

I would try maybe to see if your college has a private DC++ hub. Those can be far better than torrents.

Basically a seedbox can be an entire computer, so yes, you *could* install something for usenet and then retrieve the downloaded files though FTP.......Don't know why you would.

So I can use free IPv6!:w00t: (which doesn't have SSL)

It would be nice for direct downloads cause then I could put a bunch off stuff in jdownloader, and then when it's done, bam! ftp encrypted connection to my computer and I have all my shit:thumbsup:

If your college allows large traffic then yes, there should be no problem to download off servers.

Direct Connect enables students to share on campus without stressing external lines and relying on them respectively.

I just checked and it does;)

but how does it help me if I want my downloads to be undetected?

I did a little research on Direct Connect and from what I can tell I would be limited to whatever other people on the network would be willing to share, which wouldn't be very much since the hub can only be accessed through the university's internet.

Its direct connection through your college's intranet, meaning it will be very, very fast. Most files should be available, and you'll easily get great speeds.

Also, alot of colleges limit your bandwith, and DC++ normally doesn't factor into that.

I'm still a little confused on how exactly it's supposed to work - where would all the files come from if it's limited to only what's available on campus?

Just use the DC hub that is running on your campus. Outside organizations can't monitor it and it's unlikely your University will rat out their students. This last semester, the university I attended usually had 100TB+ shared at any given time.

Generally the content should be very good... but I guess it varies by campus. You should check if your campus has bandwith caps... If it does DC++ is a must.

I would also go with DC++. My college had a couple of hubs and I don't think I ever had a problem finding what I wanted. And the speeds were fantastic.

Well I will on a quite a large campus so I guess it's worth a shot, but i just don't see how I would be able to get all my foreign films and music there,and not to mention child porn (jk, jk, lol:wacko:) Also, I don't like the fact that there is no security and that other ppl would have access to my computer

I searched around a bit and I couldn't find whether or not it has bandwidth caps, so I guess I will have to find out . . . although my university seems like the type that would be pretty generous when it comes to bandwidth useage.

Yea if you're looking for really really obscure stuff though, than I guess you're stuck with torrent sites or google, but bandwith caps can put a solid dent in that.

Also, you're much less likely to get in trouble using DC++, but as since you're looking for relatively obscure content it might not be that big of a deal.

I was thinking about getting some blocknews, but as Rart mentioned, the "obscure content" might be a little difficult to find, solely on DC or usenet.

I'm considering investing in a cheap seedbox and downloading everything through there, including direct downloads, which I use most often. Too bad I cant post in the seedbox section yet. . .

That itshidden site looks a little sketchy to me. Isn't it only for web browsing? Even if it's possible to download it would probably be hella slow:idunno:
