Wouldn't was be the past participle.
i.e. "If there was a God" suggests that God used to be but does not exist anymore. Which by definition does not make any sense, as without being infinite God cannot exist. A finite being is not God
So it would have to be "If there is a God". Or even better. "If God really exists".
Your turn....Quote:

I take it you are also an expert public speaker. A master orator as it were.

So maybe you can learn it with him and Google the term "subjunctive"
Hobbes,
Enlighten me, I am fascinated.
What is wrong with "If there is a God .... ".
Or my preference "If God exists .... ".
You are posting something contrary to known fact, implied by the question itself, so you must use the "subjunctive mood"Quote:

Quote:
subjunctive as:
adj. 2. in grammar, designating or of that mood of a verb used to express condition, hypothesis, contingency, possibility, etc., rather than to state an actual fact: distinguished from imperative, indicative.
n. a verb in the subjunctive mood; specifically, the subjunctive mood.
Few things annoy me more than to hear, “If I was you ...” Most who actually know that there exists a verbal mood called the subjunctive agree that it appears to be vanishing in common usage. Earlier in the twentieth century, grammarians and linguists proclaimed the subjunctive's death and argued that this was no big loss, as its historical role in English had been weak and inconsistent; some even went so far as to say that in Modern English its usage is “pretentious”. The fools ! The subjunctive mood is a beautiful and valuable component of the English language, and instead of dying out, it actually is enjoying a subtle revival.
I guess I got this hammered into me while learning Spanish, I had never really acknowledged it before then, and it was certainly stressed in class.
So "is" is in the "indicative" mood, a statement of fact http://www.hyperdictionary.com/dictionary/indicative
Your statements should be "If there were to be a God" and "If God were to exist" indicating the conditional nature of the statement.
I will admit to you JP that I often don't use the mood as it "sounds" wrong to the unaccustomed ear.
What do you think?
i found the answer with the help of Microsoft Word, i entered:Quote:

'If there is a God would he eat chips?'
and it corrected it to:
'If there were a God would he eat chips?'
ive seen a couple of threads change name recently. have a poll on this ones name
If there is a god
if there were a god
if there was a god
if god exists
if god did be there and e' liked me and stuff
have i missed any?
its our language we choose how to use it
I think, were there to be a poll ( catch that Hobbes?), that I would vote for "if god did be there and e' liked me and stuff"
simply because the "and stuff" includes the possibility of the infinite, implicit in " god did be there".
Of course, as always, I asked myself " what would Bishop Spong say?"
Hobbes
"You are posting something contrary to known fact ... "
If we set aside the apparent tautology, I don't agree that I am posting something contrary to "known fact".
As may faith patently outweighs your grammar, I have to reject your argument.
Sorry, I know it's harsh but that's the way the cookie crumbles sometimes.
I will have to insist on using The's excellent altenative.
In fact if we follow him we can all become The'ists.
"If there were to be a poll" surelyQuote:
