nod32 or norton antivirus
I use avg
http://www.grisoft.com
its great and uses very few resources, you need a good fire wall, I suggest zonealarm, both have free version, I'd recommend the zapro4 so you can import the bad ip list from peer guardian
I already have ZAP4, I will try avg

Wow this question is asked a lot. Check the pinned thread "Antivirus Software".

I don't have a ps2 or xbox but I got GTA3 vice city and halo on suprnova
Norton would do the job for most.
FYI, from a recent declassified document from the Pentagon who uses cryptography against viruses
CONCLUSION
We have briefly surveyed the uses of cryptography in viruses, in anti-virus software, and in general security systems as they apply to viruses and related threats. While cryptographic techniques alone are only tools, far removed from the finished working systems that we need to build, they are potentially useful tools. In some cases cryptography can actually make virus protection more difficult; we have tried to outline those cases and the various methods that can be used to overcome that difficulty. In some cases cryptography is irrelevant to virus protection.
However, in some cases, digital signatures in particular, we believe that cryptography will play an important role in the way our systems are secured in the future, both against viruses and against the more general class of emerging threats.
Norton Antivirus is an easy pick. I dl'd it and still get the updates free.
all I know is I have plenty of friends get owend by a virus, and they now use avg
Norton has caused enough problems, [please dis believe the hype

I have tried installing norton 3 times, evertime it installs fine and computer restarts then it is on the running on the tray and I cannot get it to open, then after i click on it about 50 times it just shuts down.

u sure norton is the only antivirus on your computer because u should never have more than one kind of antivirus software on your computer at the same time.Quote:

I had mcafee on it and could not uninstall it but i have deleted all the files for it.
what was your version of mcafee?? what was the problem?? what was the uninstall error?? and why in gods name did you delete the file without uninstall?? now you have other files on your pc
It was version 7, when i tried to uninstall it i would get all this fatal error crap and the uninstall would stop (had not yet deleted anything), mcafee will not let you shut it down if it installed, just disable the virus scan for 60 minutes. All this started happening when i tried to upgrade to virus scan 8.0 and it wanted me to first uninstall 7, I am getting a new 120GB hard drive soon so I am going to reinstall windows and everything else on it.Quote:

Would window washer 5 work ok for this?
yup I had that same problem with mcafee back on my old craptop. damn thing didnt remove itself from the registry, or the autoexec.bat and kept trying to load itself up, even tho it had already been uninstalled.
actually, if you are getting that C error at boot for mcafee, you could try this, it might help. start>run>type in MSCONFIG tic selective startup, the go to the autoexec.bat tab, and untick mcafee, if it's listed there.
the three top rated VS's right now are: Panda Titanium, AVP, and Pc-Cillin.
norton is mediocre; I've found viruses with AVP and Pc-Cillin that norton has completely missed.
So far as NIS- it's caused conflicts with my other internet software, such as my popup blocker, and Sygate.
edit: it would block Spybot from innoculating the IE too. I didnt like it
i just use mcafee! i updated it and i think its awesome!
if you dont like it, try norton av(as teh ppl above said).
i have heard of many others but never used them so i cant help you further than that!

I am currently using Kaspersky.
I don't know all of them but I noticed that :
- Norton Antivirus is more or less incompatible with the firewall from the same editor which decreases the trust we have in those softwares
- Norton Antivirus slows down a lot the machine, particularly Outlook.
- I found PC Cillin nice until I set up Kaspersky which found about 5viruses in 30 files that were not detected by the 1st one !
- In some cases, it is necessary to boot from a clean rescue CD. I dont know any of them which can make a updatable and bootable windows CD.
You can setup the DOS F-Prot on a CD but with the largest options it scans 300 files on the windows hard drive, which is much less than the actual number of files.
i use avg and nav corp, work great, avg as resident and nav corp as non resident.
