My vote goes to uTorrent. :unsure:
utorrent
uTorrent for Windows, rtorrent for Linux systems.
Macs are a useless overpriced ripoff of *BSD, but if you're so inclined their best client is Vuze.

Those should put you in good stead pretty much anywhere. Use 1.8.5 for maximum compatibility with all trackers (that version is whitelisted everywhere as far as I know). Unless you have some compelling reason to use another version it's probably the best choice.

Depends on your definition of "best", and which OS you're using. Assuming you use Windows, the following are the 2 most popular ones:
1. uTorrent - light client, has 90% of the features you need, and a few you don'twant.
2. Azuereus - most feature-rich client and has a good selection of plugins. Heavier on system resources than uT.
The specific recommendation of a client/version depends on the sites you frequent. Some sites ban some clients/versions and others ban others. For a new torrenter I would probably recommend uT 1.8.2, if the sites he's on allow it, or uT 1.8.5.

Probably not the best torrent client, but its open source and as light as μTorrent, it's name is Halite.
It's lightweight, and currently has lot of features.
Also, I think is the only client that has a native 64-bits version.

Uhh, no they don't. People use 1.6.1 because it's the last version released before BitTorrent Inc. started influencing the code. Some people use 1.6 instead because it came out long before that deal even happened.
Many trackers have banned these clients as they're horribly outdated and 1.6 at least has a security flaw, so telling him to use those is kind of dumb unless he has a reason to.
The 1.8.x series is fine as long as you get the proper version/build, there were some pretty buggy ones.
