zonealarm
Sygate Personal Firewall. :)
The best would be a hardware firewall,
Second best a router.
And then lastly, software firewall, and I pick zonealarm for those
.
Nothing compares to Sygate. ZoneAlarm is highly over rated.
and why is sygate any better than za? :unsure:Quote:

Does Zone Alarm have anti-Mac spoofing? Anti-IP spoofing? OS Fingerprint maquerading? DoS detection? UPnP blocking? The list goes on...
would you mind explaining some of these to us? i didn't get half of it :PQuote:

sygate sucks it doesn't even have a free version not to mention trial versions
what good is a firewall if ppl can't download it and install?
at least za has a free version for ppl to use and it means a lot to computer users
http://server3.uploadit.org/files/131103-za.jpg
i am sure za has all the major features that sygate has..
? ? Free SygateQuote:

- Enable anti-IP spoofing. By default, this option is disabled on the Personal Firewall. IP spoofing is a process used by hackers to hijack a communication session between two computers, which we will call Computers A and B. A hacker can send a data packet that causes Computer A to drop the communication. Then, pretending to be Computer A, the hacker can communicate with Computer B, thus hijacking a communication session and attempting to attack Computer B. Anti-IP spoofing foils most IP spoofing attempts by randomizing the sequence numbers of each communication packet, preventing a hacker from anticipating a packet and intercepting it. It is recommended that you enable this option along with Enable OS fingerprint masquerading.
- Enable OS fingerprint masquerading. By default, this option is enabled on the Personal Firewall. This option keeps programs from detecting the operating system of a computer running the Personal Firewall software. When OS Fingerprint Masquerading is enabled, the Personal Firewall modifies TCP/IP packets so it is not possible to determine its operating system. It is recommended that you enable this option along with Enable anti-IP spoofing.
- Enable DoS protection. By default, this option is enabled on the Personal Firewall. This option causes the Personal Firewall to check incoming traffic for known Denial of Service (DoS) attack patterns. DoS attacks are characterized by an explicit attempt by an intruder to prevent legitimate users of a service from using that service.
- Block Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) Traffic By default, this option is enabled in the Personal Firewall. This option causes the Personal Firewall to look for and block UPnP traffic to counter the vulnerabilities that are introduced by this operating system feature: The first vulnerability could enable an attacker to gain complete control over an affected system, while the second vulnerability could enable an attacker to either prevent an affected system from providing useful service or utilize multiple users’ systems in a distributed denial of service attack against a single target. Users can disable this feature when using applications that require the UPnP protocol to operate.
The free ZA is quite limited as well.Quote:

does it prevent unauthorized outgoing email transmissions? (trojans or keylogger tried to call home)
the os masquerading is really the same as the za's "remove private header info" in privacy settings
enable ip-spoofing, i dont really see this as an outstanding feature as most reputable firewalls prevents unauthorized outgoing traffic. za "labels" programs much like kazaa reads sig for a file and encrypts all the "sig" with each program so trojans can't masquerade as a legit program requesting internet rights or servers rights.
enable dos attack: i think this is just plain bs, if you are really under dos attack there is NOTHING you can do except to get ur isp to filter out the unwanted traffic, firewalls can only block out packets but you are still blasted off the internet
block upnp, za has this too, my router has it, no big deal
Kerio Personal Firewall 2.1.5 [freeware]. I'm not even going to explain, try it yourself and see why is it far better than all other free/commercial firewalls.
sygates the way to go :)
ok, i am wandering since there seems tyo be alot of firewll techis here, is there a firewall that will make me completley anoynimous, because past that my hardware firewall does all the rest just fine...
No.

I have a double zone alarm firewall. Good enough to block 99% of attacks?
Linksys and Software firewall
they both do the same job, as long as you have one your ok :)
u'll be pretty safe. the riaa's windows 3.0 and dos will have a hard time hacking through ur 128 bit encryption, but it might slow ur dls as wellQuote:

OK
But what makes norton worse than sygate and za
cuz norton is just trying to have a share of the firewall market, along with their "other products". in retrospect za is a dedicated company that licenses top quality firewall software.
norton is running business increasing like microsoft... <_<
Have you used Norton's firewall? Probably not.Quote:

Does anyone read PC Magazine?
They have Norton Personal Firewall AND Zone Alarm Pro as editor's choices. I'll believe them before I believe a mere handful of users on this forum because YOU haven't even used the product.
Oh and I would test either of these products, pick one then add your hardware firewall. (hardware firewalls are usually enough)
apparently you dont know much about internet security... <_<Quote:

Actually I do. To the average user a hardware firewall IS usually enough. I didn't say to only use that though. As I said, pick one top software firewall AND a hardware firewall.
You obviously don't know anything about Norton's firewall. Your're sitting there sprouting opinions about a piece of software you've never used just because they're "just trying to have a share of the firewall market, along with their "other products".
They seem to have done a pretty good job.
Keep your uneducated want-to-know-it-all opinions to yourself.
Your ego won't shrink any less if you just STFU sometimes. ;)
oh wow if you run so low on words you can always flip open a dictionary, no need for stfu :P
anyways this topic is open for discussion i dont need to keep opinions to myself.
if you are so narrow minded about other ppl's opinions i suggest you turn off ur computer, go outside and yell "ooooosa" to strangers. Believe me, it'll do you some good ;)
