I just ran into this topic over at the DSLreports forum. It appears that cable internet providers have already recieved downstream speed increases, and will soon be recieving upstream speed increases. Read more about it here.
I have noticed faster downloads lately, but I didn't know that Time Warner increased speeds. I really can't wait to see the new upload speeds. Filesharers rejoice! :D

Compete is what way? Cable is faster than DSL, and it's getting faster. That's a fact.

Even the most conjested cable lines are faster than average DSL, and you know it! Please don't come with the "shared line/nearest office" mumbo jumbo. We all know it's marketing BS from the phone companies and it doesn't prove a thing. I've had DSL before. It doesn't come close to my cable connection. It doesn't require that PPPoeP whatever crap either.
What do you have to say about DSL now?
Does this apply to UK cable? (the speed increase i mean). I have NTL cable 600k and pay equivalent to $ 38 a month. Its quicker than ADSL, which is only about 512k.
I'll be changing ISP once my contract expires with NTL and get 2 mb/s ADSL for only $45, normally you only get 512k for this price, but found a good ISP.
If cable increases speed i''l stay with current provider.
Any info will be appreciated :D
No way thats in the US won't happen here too greedy for your pennies,don't forget dsl isn't always 2megs depends how many are on at a time cable (well mind never goes down) stays high and the upload is still only 256 unless you get synmatical think thats how it spelt,anyway same up as down.
I don't know if it started but my connection just got faster, this past weekend. My dsl connection was 1MB dl, now it's 2MB.. Im still stunned at the fact I'm getting these speeds..lol it surprised me. Thanks to my ISP for the early christmas present.. DSL Rocks!!

2MB DSL? I'm flyin at 3MB here on cable, 400K UL. It's about to be upgraded to 512k. Any DSLers care to challenge that?
well, your probably paying more for your 3mb connect..lol 30 bucks is what I pay for my 1Mb connect.. but my ISP has increased it to 2mb.. 2MB dl for 30 bucks.. can't get any better .. atleast for my area..
Top speeds for ADSL modems is still less than 10 mbps, while not-too-special cablemodems (which aren't limited to a 10 mbps ethernet connection) can reach speeds as high as 42 mbps. This of course assumes infrastructure can support them! Typical ADSL equipment maxes out at 8 mbps down and only 1-2 mbps up. But even many of the really cheap cablemodems can do 10 mbps both directions.Quote:

BOTH ADSL *AND* cablemodems ALSO have to fight for LIMITED INTERNET GATEWAY bandwidth at their ISPs!
It's true that there may be 10-100 people on the same 'branch' of the cable lines as me, but I was told we're all sharing a dual FDDI connection running back to the ISP at 100 mbps (200 mbps effectively due to it being dual.) My ISP's internet gateway for the AREA isn't that fast. :(
It doesn't matter if you've got your own private line from your house ALL the way back to the ISP's networking center if you're still multiplexed with everyone in your local area to go through a single T-3 line running at 45 mbps. If there's 45 users, then the AVERAGE connection speed can only be 1 mbps max -- but because MOST people are using less than 0.1 mbps on average there's typically plenty bandwidth to spare for the few who are 'hogs'. But if the ISP offers to sell lines rated at that speed, they shouldn't get onto people for trying to use them (even CONSISTANTLY/CONSTANTLY) at that speed.
ISPs reasonably oversell their lines BECAUSE most people don't try to use >50% of the connection's max speed except in short bursts. Even hardcore file sharing users (at least on Kazaa...) will have trouble sustaining 50+KB/sec download speeds if they're getting only 'rare' files.
My ISP sux. My dsl download speeds are at a max of 40k and upload is maybe 15k at the most. Damn you people and your fast internet connections! :angry: :angry:

My Cable is a sollid 4000+/128 kb/s for € 45 and my cellphone is € 7.50 a month. The first 300 meters of the line is coax and all glasfiber beyond the street level switchbox. I never noticed any effect of the "shared line" you people boast about.
For € 50-55 I can get ASDL 1024/320 or 2048/640 for € 80-90, AND I need a analog phoneline at € 17.79.
So I'll stick with my Cable/Cellphone combi and leave my K++ settings at 88 kb/s UL limit. :P :P :P
$41.95 a month. 35% more money isn't much when you get 50% more download speed and 200% more upload speed (soon to be 300% more). You still think DSL is a bargain?Quote:

2880down/512up and we pay 54.xx canadian a month.. i always get download speeeds of over at least 60k/sec..
DSL = Set DL speed, no difference
Cable depends on who is on, and what the other people are doing.

Network congestion affects all types of internet connections, not just cable. All internet lines are shared. You think you have your own little private DSL line connected to the main office? Think again...

Well, with *DSL you can get up to 23Mbit duplex currently, this however is HEAVILY dependant on how far away from the station you are. To get that tho, you need to have <= 300m cable to the station (ie. not a whole can get it up this fast ;) ). The worst you get with this connection is 8M/1M, I would have gotten around 15M/15M, but as I already have 10M/10M and don't use my phone at all (don't have to pay the phone company) I stick with this connection (cheap as well, $26/mo)Quote:

Make sure you haven't confused kilobits/sec (the speeds your internet connection is generally reported in by your ISP) and KiloBYTES/sec -- download/upload speeds you see in web browsers and file resumer programs.Quote:

88 KB/sec = 704 kilobits/sec NOT COUNTING TCP/IP overheads! (This would be a VERY fast upload bandwidth indeed!)
The UL limit in Kazaa can't be set by KB. It's set by Kb. I'm pretty sure he means 88 Kb/s.
Hi all, Im running on cable. Just hit the Bandwidthplace link and did the free test. Would 3.4 mps be considered fast? B) I tried the dsl thing, they tried to guarantee the same speed at the same price. Best I ever got out of dsl was 870kps

T1 is about as available as cable and DSL, but it is VERY expensive. Satellite is your best bet if you can't get DSL or cable.

I had Time Warner/RoadRunner Cable Modem in Austin, TX back in 1995 when it first became available in the area. It was about $59.99/month for I think ~1mb down and like ~128kb up.
I was one of the first people in my area to get it and the speeds were amazing for the first year or so;
Then I started seeing DRAMATIC slow downs and constant outages.
Moved to Denver, CO in 1999 and got AT&T DSL. Don't remember exact price or speed but I think it was $49.99 for ~368kb up to 1.5mb down and ~128kb up to ~256kb up.
I instantly fell in love with DSL. No slowdowns, no outages, consistently high speeds averaging ~768kb up to ~1.5mb almost always. Throughput on file transfers always seems faster on DSL.
Moved to Irvine, CA in 2000 and had COX Cable Modem.
This thing sucked!!!
We got in on a special for like $29.99/month for a ~1.5mb up to ~3mb down and supposedly up as well.
It sounded too good to be true and it was.
I rarely ever got near ~1mb, even at 3 a.m. And at peak hours I might as well have been on dial-up. SLOW DIALUP!!!
And we had outages for at least two days out of every month!
We eneded up moving to a different part of town that offered Verizon DSL. Switched over to a $39.99/month ~512kb up to ~1.5mb down and ~256kb up.
SUPER FAST and always up!
I swore off Cable forever after this.
But I ended up moving to College Station, TX and could only get COX Cable in my area. When school was out and the town was empty it worked great.
I actually got close to ~3mb at times.
As soon as school started up and the town filled back up with students I was lucky to get close to ~1mb.
Never really had any outages though.
Moved to Dallas, TX shortly after that (College Station SUCKS SO BAD!!!).
Got Verizon DSL and never had a single problem.
Now living in Austin, TX and using SBC DSL. Works great and as you can see, I'm hitting ~1.3mb. That's about average for me and I only pay $39.99 for ~768kb-~3mb down, ~512kb up.
A friend is using Time Warner Cable here in Austin and tells me his is down all the time.
I bet any Austin area Time Warner users will confirm these outages if they are being honest.
You can throw all the statistics and numbers at me you want, but based on real world experience my DSL ROCKS!!! :P :D
You say your cable speeds varied, but so do your DSL speeds... It bothers you when cable speeds vary, but it's ok when it happens with DSL? What's the difference? There must be something terrible wrong with the cable system in your area, because I haven't ever gone below 2 Mb here in New York City. We have 12 million inhabitants, so I share the lines with alot of people. When I had DSL, I was lucky to get over 650K. I never got near the advertised 768k. Uploading was terrible. The slightest upload traffic would bring overall speeds to a crawl... the point where there was no response.
DSL is just too weak. But hey... I guess it depends on your area/line quality/ISPs/etc. So it may not be the same for everyone.
Actually I believe I said my DSL always averages about ~1.3mb+.
The bandwidth ranges posted for my monthly fees are just to show the lowest and highest the line will ever go.
The key factor being the lowest guaranteed speed.
Cable never guarantees any speeds.
At least with my DSL I know that I will never drop below ~768kb, no matter how many users are online in my area.
My DSL speeds are constant where Cable fluctuates constantly, even on an hourly basis.
And I can honestly say I have never had an outage with DSL.
And sure Cable is raising thier speeds, but I bet a lot of that bandwidth is going to disappear quickly as digital cable TV and other digital cable features become more popular and start sucking it all up.
Actually, Digital TV doesn't affect cable modems. They both run on different frquencies. If it weren't for the different frequencies, It wouldn't be possible to have analog tv, digital tv, and cable internet running on the same lines. It's the same basic principle that allows phone lines to share analog and digital connections.

heya, coming from holland here, my dad owns a company, and recently bought a 1gb glasfiber connection, which i can also use at home:P if nobody is online at the company (after closing hours) i can get incridible downloading speeds, as fast and the sever providing the data is able to give it to me. limewire (P2P) downloads reach 20mb/sec (total of all downloads), etc etc its sweet:D. but expensive. but having is for the whole company is way more effecienct than a normal ADSL/DSL connection as it is really slow with lots of users on it. and as it is a computer company is is way usefull. ill give you the site of the provider:

Cox has increasded their speeds in several cities, I get about 9000/1000 now..as of dec. 1st actually. Before it was 5000/768
Downloaded some torrents w/ avg speeds 0f 877Kb/sec
mine was increased to 15Mb down/2Mb up at no extra cost. :)
