I'm probably not the typical use case but I'll chime in anyway.
The strongest alternative to an automated setup that I know of would be NZBGet & NzbDrone. Get runs on everything from RPis to NAS appliances.
I don't automate, so I use a combination of alt.binz and newsleecher. For providers primarily Astra with a half dozen block accts, mostly European.
EDIT: Beck38 posted this in another thread, pretty sound http://filesharingtalk.com/threads/4...37#post3727237
SAB and astraweb. I don't have anything automated either. I like to look through this site once a day. It has been a good resource to find new tv shows I have not yet heard of that way.
SAB/sickbeard/xbmc all i need :)
Pretty extensive, although really nothing is 100% dedicated to it (machine wise).
SABnzb like most folks for max downloading
Don't need any 'auto' anything as very nearly 99.98% of broadcast tv is brain dead, and the .01% that's interesting eventually ends up on DVD (SD) or Bluray (HD OR SD) in far better quality than anything that's been captured off the air - still have a Hauppague HD-PVR for occasional HD movies and such that aren't on BR and (maybe) never will be.
Will go past 100TB of on-line storage this time next week (next stage of NAS is on order being checked as I write this).
Providers: Main/Astraweb, Blocknews, Giganews.
Many PC's 'in production' of heavy 24/7/365 posting and filling up all those Terabytes listed above. Everything I've ever done is either (or both) in on-line storage or burned to DVD/BR and posted to usenet.
i use newsleecher then this site
Newsleecher with tweaknews .Simple and Compact
Downloader: SABNZBD (With DogNZB Remote Push).
Accounts: Astra, free hitnews, free newsfinder, free xennanews (Free Accounts Auto Updating)
Renamer: TV.Renamer.v0.7.Beta2 No Longer In Production
Media Player: Plex, Android TV Stick Using Plex
If It Doesn't Come Down Via SAB, Then I Result To uTorrent.
DL - sabnzbd
Sites - private ones
USP - Cached/Relay articles from EU/US on custom servers
Newsleecher via astraweb with tweaknews, blocknews and newsdemon for backup.
Astraweb is provided by my isp as part of my internet access, so no (extra) cost for that.
Manual renaming. NAS streaming to computers, media players and smart tv's throughout the house.
sabnzbd, sickbeard, tweaknes, newsdemon
Usenetserver on ssl and still use unzbin even tho you can barely find the program anymore.
Server: tweaknews.eu
Downloader: sabnzbd running on Server 2012
Method: I manually download all my movies and shows from FST.com on my Windows 8.1 desktop, using this neat little trick to send .nzb to the server: http://wiki.sabnzbd.org/howto-associate
HTPC: Mac Mini 2009* with 10.7 Lion (*Nvidia 9400m, so x264 1080p hardware accelerated)
Remote: Harmony 650
Media Center: XBMC 12
Newsleecher more , Alt.binz less
Newshosting
StrongVPN
Various Sites
Looks like I'm the only one using Grabit?
Astraweb as primary
Backup accounts with Tweaknews, NewsDemon and SuperNews
Newsgroup direct (with free.xsusenet.com as a backup)

TV
NewsgroupDirect(block acct.) sometimes free hitnews & xennews for fills >> SabNZB >>PyTiVo (server)>>TiVo>>TV.... recent
Before PyTiVo I was using Plex - mostly or Serviio or PS3 Media (DLNA servers) to Roku and/or WDLive Plus or smart TV ..OR.. data files to flashdrive to same devices or Sony Bluray (also data DVD).
All had various strengths and weaknesses
Liking the TiVo setup now for superior picture and navigation.
Automation? I use Forte Agent for reading and light downloads. I use Newsleecher for the nzb work. Does me just fine I expect I am Old Skool!
usenet server 10 a month and newsbin pro for dl
NZB-o-matic (tried and true)
tweaknews
Plex (fav), WD Live
Supernews with a sabnzbd / sickbeard / couch potato - combo. all my downloads dump into PLEX and because I paid for the plexpass also sync to my 100Gb dropbox account. My media box where all this is set up on hase 2TB of available movies/tv/music/pron etc. I have Roku's attached to all three home tv's and stream everything on the sever to them. Full disclosure. I actually pay for netflix, huluplus, aereo, and have an amazon prime account. Usenet is mostly for current tv shows (with no commercials) and movies (especially during screener season).
Sab running on a micro server with storage..will add automation at some point..I have a beaglebone and raspi pi not doing much other than kms
I've never been a big fan of auto downloads. I loved the "watchdog" features, but still want to manually confirm before downloading.
sabnzb with sickbeard. Saves so much time rather than manually going through nzb sites
Anything better than Tweaknews out there? I need something with better speed.
reader - sabnzbd
site - i check multiple indexing sites
provider - frugal for daily and blocknews as a filler or longer retention stuff.
Newsleecher inc supersearch
Astraweb
Tweaknews - block to pick up the strays.
Multiple indexing sites.
Does it for me for now.
I'm using old reliable, TL Newsreader with Giganews.
Newsleecher and ISP based server.
I use sabnzb and sickbeard. I haven't had great success with couch potatoe.
I use giganews and a backup provider (that I won't list because I want it to stay small :)
I use SABNZBD which runs on my Synology NAS and Tweaknews
I have on a dedicate filer server with:
- SABnzb
- SickBeard
- Couch Potato
Post processing
- Media center master
Two NUCs clients with XBMC
Working on Newznab
sabnzbd on a windows server, grabbing from usenetserver also have a htpc running windows (mpc-hc) for watching everything connected up in the living room :)
I use SABnzbd as a client and Tweaknews as a provider (recommended!). Got a LG NAS (its crap - so wish I'd spent a bit more and got a decent one !) which provides files, data to all my devices :)
Hackintosh running SABnzbd and Plex to beam it to a Roku box. Files I rewatch are kept on a 1TB USB 2.0 backup.
Newsbin Via Giganews onto my home server and then to various devices, sometimes on disc backup
Newsleecher Astra/Giga tunneled through VyprVPN im paranoid...
Proxmox with a ZFS 10tb volume and 4 vm's
1. NewzNAB
2. SABNZBD using usenetserver
3. Pydio
4. Plex
Remote viewing is done over wifi with roku in 1 room, and laptop's at each tv, I usually just run VLC and browse to the file share
SAB
Dutch NNTP
That's about it. No live TV anymore 'coz I hate watching on someone else's time. But I did do Hauppauge (sp?) Way Back When (tm)
