Do You Still Use Private Trackers?
I'm wondering; how many members still use private bittorrent trackers since being on USENET?
-
Re: Do You Still Use Private Trackers?
i am not using usenet. I am using private torrents only because other people publish some torrents only on private sites. When using good VPN, i prefer public torrents.
-
Re: Do You Still Use Private Trackers?
I use both, you cannot find everything in one place. Services like netflix, spotify, iptv makes people download less than before. I think torrent will get a revival once some innovation comes in, as countries are trying to make the possible to block pages. You cannot kill an idea.

Re: Do You Still Use Private Trackers?
Public trackers cover my needs very well nowadays, but it's always good to keep your options open. ;)

Re: Do You Still Use Private Trackers?
BTN for TV, yify for movies, spotify/youtube for music. I'm sure I could get rid of BTN too if warez-bb wasn't down all the time.

Re: Do You Still Use Private Trackers?
I do use some private and public trackers, no Usenet. Sometimes DDL.

I registered after making my post, and they seem very good. With Warez-BB currently on life support, it's time to look for alternatives.

Re: Do You Still Use Private Trackers?
As long as the streaming sites don't cover all movies/TV, torrent sites will always exist though I think that is unfortunate as torrent sites are an outdated and quite frankly boring tech. Niche sites like KG will always have a place.

I doubt that streaming sites will cover everything at some point, each wants their own content, hence torrents will prevail. Back in the days they weren't so boring :P
The downside of many specialized sites (niche) is that there is not as much activity, or they lack of seeds

They never will, for a simple reason: licensing. If a work is not deemed profitable or the original licensors say no, then it's not going to show up. On top of that, there is very old and rare stuff whose master copies or even copyright holders may not be around anymore, and therefore only exists as bootleg rips. Think of decades-old TV shows, underground musicians, Satellaview ROMs...
Pirates don't have to worry about that. If a copy of something exists at all then it can be uploaded. That's why Kodi plus the right addons has so much more stuff than Netflix, and Grooveshark was so much better than Spotify.

Define outdated. BitTorrent v2 was (finally) formalized very recently. Prior to that, enhancement proposals made sure the protocol kept up with the times; things we take for granted today, like DHT and multiple trackers, are not part of the original specification.
As for "boring", that's too broad and subjective, but I don't see how being able to get stuff for free is boring?

Agree with everything you said. By boring I meant that you have to always download it before you can watch it. I live in India so I have a bandwidth cap plus I have limited speed so I have to wait till the download is complete before I can watch so I prefer streaming. Also I hate seeding and leaving the laptop on cause I tend to get distracted and so I flip utorrent constantly have to worry about whether the seed time or seed ratio has been met. Overall after streaming sites I prefer direct download sites like warez because you just download the file and forget about everything else, makes me wonder what the incentive is for uploaders on these warez sites besides a warm thank you.

For me, having to download first is an advantage, as it means I'll actually have a copy of the content and be able to watch/listen to it as much as I want, online or offline, on any device. In your case, though, I can see why it's a liability.

Can't argue against this; I rarely use private trackers yet still check on my client every few minutes to see what and how much I'm uploading :glagpinch:

Well, DDL forum uploaders have one well-known incentive. Check which file and image hosts they use the most, then check what their rewards and referral programs offer. If anything, I'm more puzzled about torrent uploaders, as profit opportunities from that are very limited or nonexistent (especially on public and semi-private places like TPB, Demonoid or RuTracker). I think those are way more likely to be the ones getting nothing but a "thank you".
Irrespective of motivation, though, at the end of the day they're putting free stuff for me to download, so I'm always grateful.

On private trackers uploader incentive could be to get invited to other sites or "high level" sites. What's the incentive for uploaders on piratebay or public trackers?

I have uploaded several torrents to public trackers, and my motivation was sharing something because I liked it and/or to prevent rare files from becoming "lost". I'd wager it's the same for most people... unless you're uploading crypto miners or ransomware, of course :turned:

I recently learned that IPT and OppaiTime are two exceptions to this.

This. My philosophy is the same. The rare stuff that you can't find on a private or public tracker needs to be out there and spread around for anyone who wants it. But I don't upload to public trackers. Simply because it gives people the excuse to download and then stop seeding the file.
On a private tracker (especially ratio based ones) you can have retention cos you have to seed the file. The plus point is that even the rare stuff gets well seeded which in turn give you the chance to keep your ratio healthy.

Well, the choices don't need to be mutually exclusive. Just make sure to either recreate your public torrents with a different info_hash or seed them from a separate client to avoid the infamous "add multiple announce URLs, get banned for apparent ratio cheating" situation. You never know which ones will stick around the longest... sometimes the answer will surprise you. ;)
Of course, that's assuming your connection speed is decent enough to keep up with two swarms per upload and you don't live in a country where you can get copyright raped for seeding public torrents. You may have to compromise otherwise.
Posting to Usenet is another good idea, but comes with its own set of idiosyncrasies.

I cross seed. I have no issues with it. I also tend to seed what i upload for as long as I can but then I have so much content I want to share that keeping a lot of it seeding on my laptop isn't possible.
Sure I know seedboxes are out there but nope. I'm just too old fashioned that way and won't spend money for that shit just to get stats. Cos that's all that seedboxes are good for IMHO.
Usenet... Uh no thanks. I'm ok with torrenting. It's been working for me for .... 6 years? Man I can't even remember. I haven't been torrenting as much as many other people here or on most private trackers but I've come to learn and understand quite a bit and it just works for me.

This and inactivity policies may be why I've trimmed my tracker database significantly over the years ;)

If you value retention, Usenet is a force to be reckoned with, however. Imagine downloading something from 10 years ago at maximum speed.

Well honestly why should I spend money to just earn stats? It's just does not make any sense for me to pay money for them because if you're doing it for the stats, ratio and bump in user classes then you're doing it wrong or atleast for the wrong reasons. Well thats my opinion anyway.
I barely use private trackers. I just use two of them and the rest I don't even know how long it's been since I've logged on to them. :slap:

Nah I think I'm ok with torrenting. As for retention I know it's important but I seed what I grab or what I share for as long as possible. Like the new tracker I'm on their retention isn't great right now so I'm gonna seed shit like a mofo for as long as possible.
It may sound naive... But sharing is after all caring. ;)

Re: Do You Still Use Private Trackers?
I still use a couple of private trackers, one is mainly for ebooks, which are not always easy to find on usenet.

Just a couple sites these days, the big book site and the little movie site.

Why don't you join PTP when they're an IMDB download site effectively? Just curious cause you're a staffer and you can easily get into a site like PTP.

Still use. Mainly Bithumen, nCore, TvStore, BTN. Havent been here for a while... :)
-
Re: Do You Still Use Private Trackers?
Hi, I remember you ;)
nCore is a great example of a small non-English tracker going big and international by merit alone. Same with FileList... maybe Linkomanija will be next? There's also RuTracker and Zamunda, but they were never small.

Re: Do You Still Use Private Trackers?
im still using it
iptorrents and torrentleech the most
-
Re: Do You Still Use Private Trackers?
Casual torrent user for life, probably. I just download and seed, don't interact in any of the site forums.

Re: Do You Still Use Private Trackers?
Got into private trackers only recently and stumbled onto this thread. Makes me feel like i missed the boat some 12 years back when it was quite easy to get into the current elite trackers. Such is life i guess. Mostly using secret cinema, avistaz and mam. Adding FL to it should cover all my needs i think.
