Anti-virus Programs?

Does anyone have a good freeware program for virus prevention???
anyone use grisoft avg?

i use avg and it rocks has not failed me yet and is updated often.

Yeah i use AVG as well i like it it is updated sometimes regually but i dont just rely on that i use others as well and u can always do free online scans as well regually just to make sure that u are cleam from viruses.
There freeonline scans are housecall by trend and bitdefender online scan

if your going to use AV software use Norton

I use 2 Anti-viruses. Norton System works, which auto loads and is set up with auto-protect, and Ontrack system Suite, which I run periodically but does not auto start. Have found that one Anti-virus doesn't catch everything, and some programs are never included on others. (such as security trojan programs) I just feel better running the two instead of just one.

I also use 2 as had NAV not detect a few virus's now!!I have NAV on auto detect and use Panda anti virus to sacn from time 2 time.... :D

I feel a bit paranoid about downloading "free"ware off kazaa for stuff like anti-virus programs.. stuff that updates off the net and has lots of power over your system seems a bit scary to steal off its writers ;)

They safe?

Used to use PC-Cillin and now also have Kaspersky which is rated highly but is extensive...

I too have my precautions about downloading anti-virus software of kazaa coz people who download these usually dont have anti-virus protection (thus they want it ). So people could eaily target these people and share 'norton anti-virus 2003 - REAL COPY' when its actually a virus.

If you want norton, mcaffe etc of kazaa i suggest installing avg first to scan a downloaded software then just unistall if u want to use it. I use avg (it caught over 10 viruses this month) where wen i had norton i dodnt seem to get any (which made me believe didn't work).

plus norton can slow down your pc if you have aslow pc (under 700mhz, if that makes sense).

Another one for AVG here. It's never let me down yet.

my best advice to those trying to get a anti-virus program is this, its actaully quite simple, first download whatever one you want off of kazaa (nav 2003 prof. is good) then go to a site that provides free virus scans (as mentioned in an earlier post) and run a scan to make sure the av program you just downloaded has no virus', if its all clean then install/extract the file you downloaded.....thats how i did it when i first got my computer and so far no problems :P , oh and btw id recommend nav 2003 professional with REGULAR MANUAL UPDATES, the automatic ones seem to be behind, i have heard that it is because they run the auto-update on a slower ftp server or something??? i dunno, just what ive heard :rolleyes:

I have been using Nortons AV 2003 on 5 different systems. On one system the owner gets tons of emails with attatchments and Nortons has failed to detect trojans and viruses several times two of which were system cripling. I switched over to McAfee VirusScan and it detected all the ones Nortons missed. I suggest McAfee. It is faster (in some cases) and detects tons more.

You must be one in a million who think mcaffe better, Ive tried them all, using avg at the moment but I do think nortons the best. Mcaffe are rubbish (you work for mcaffe?).

I do, its great, user friendly and if you have the settings right it will do al the work, easy install, auto scan, auto update etc. And most important, its free :D Had norton, McAfee, norman, but i will stick to AVG ow yeah.

I'm not 100% sure about AVG... I used it, and once it had the 'latest' virus defs (1st of the month) it wouldn't let you update it until an entire month had gone by.

I use Norton AV and when Auto Update in enabled it downloads at least once a week... I remember when the last big virus alert happened (bugbear?) Norton downloaded new defs about twice a day! Another good point about Norton is Symantec's generousity... they give you a year's free subscritions, but if you re-format your HDD and re-install Windows (as I do every now and then) it resets your subscription status - I've had the same copy for 18 months now and never had to resubscribe. Even if it did run out, you can download the updates manually at the Symantec Security Response website - which is an excellent resourse too.

I think that using 2 separate programs is definitely a good idea, too - when I used AVG I also used F-prot - which is old fashioned, yes, but it has found things that: Norton didn't, AVG didn't and even the special Virus 'cleaning scripts' (e.g. Kak cleaner) didn't. I guess I just like it because I like to look back to the DOS past with a rose-tinited view! If anyone is interested in F-prot (!) look at:

P.S. - also, I have heard that Norton is a pain when using Outlook (& Express) - as it sits in between you and your mail server and can mess things up. But then I use Yahoo with 2 POP addresses - and Yahoo has Norton protection too :)

nav2003, haven't really tried anything else :) Never had problems with it.

I use Tren Micro's PCCillin. They also have a free online scanner/cleaner.

I use Norton on my livingroom machine and it is a hog, I use PCCilllin on the laptop and office machine and it seems better.

I use norton Antivirus Pro, never feild me yet :)

(check for updates often)

I also use avg, but thats like an okey program

those are for trojans but they sometimes can pick up other virus.....

Get Norton Anti-Virus 2003 Professional. Works great and it come with more features than the standard one does. I use it and i love the auto-protect.

Norton's good, got AVG too, but you know that you can go to symantec or trend for free online scans. The only problem I've seen with trend and Norton is with some worms. Opaserv is a bastard to get rid of and Norton couldn't kill it, neither did Trend's housecall, just said .......yup it's there, tried to quarentine but no go, had to go to kapersky to find a manual removal page. an av is good yes, but I trust you're also running a decent firewall.

I've used NAV for around ten years - before Symantec bought it, and it's good. However, Sys Works installs lots of proggies you'll never use, plus it slows the system by about 10% (which they admit). One "Catch 22" to look out for is DL a "freebie" AV and then using a free webscan is that most of them do not scan compressed files - which your DLed AV is.

yep, NAV 2003 works for me&#33; :D

I have Norton AV and it&#39;s worked great for me&#33;*knock&#39;s on wood*

Occasionally, one or the other will get a little ahead of the others on definitions, but that&#39;s not really usually the problem. At any rate, there&#39;s ample time between when the file is DLed and when one burns it, or shows it, to scan it with fresh definitions DLed. Remember that it&#39;s dormant and harmless, DLed, until you try to run it.

I use Panda anti-vir it is updated daily

people who have speed problems, is probably because they have norton set to scan everything including compressed

i have doubts that the weekly updates do anything, virus&#39; don&#39;t change that much do they?

my NAV picked up the opaserv virus once (3 different types&#33;) it didn&#39;t fix it but i think its because the way the virus works (edits win.ini) i had to go to the symantec website and d/l a little proggy designed to kill opaerv

i used to have pc-cillin but it was old and didn&#39;t work properly with windows ME
the online scanner is kinda good (if a bit slow) but doesn&#39;t give you real-time scan does it?

Actually, they come up with new ones each week and modify old ones, usually in the direction of making them more destructive. The scan does go faster, if it doesn&#39;t scan within compressed folders, but I always right-click and scan a ZIP, etc., before I open it.

I&#39;ve been using Avast(free when you go to the website & register the key, otherwise it&#39;s like a 3 month trial) and so far it&#39;s been great. It&#39;s found a couple of trojans and found this win32 hantaner(seems rampant on Kazaa) at least 6 times,and cleaned everything up nicely. It also auto-updates at least a couple of times a week, so far so good. Considering no one else has mentioned it, I wonder if there is something rotton about it that I&#39;m unaware of? Anyone else use/have used Avast, and any thoughts??

Im using Norton 2003, seems to work ok. They have a weekly update on wednesdays and if there is a new virus on the "market" that needs attention, one can install manually definition files, they are available as soon as they found a cure. :)

I also have Sygate Firewall on 99%. Sometimes i turn it off if im playing games online, it seems to slow things down a bit.

Norman is good Antivirus app too, and from the site i can find muchos info of latest viruses. There&#39;s a list on the right side; http://www.norman.com/

Im thinking, do these Antivirus companys co-operate together? As if theres a new virus found, do they inform each other about it? :unsure:
