Have you tried a virus scan? did you try searching through the help files there?
Turned off activeX or scripts in your browser?
could it be a prob with my os?
heres my error:
thing is, i look for windowsupdate folder in program files, and it's not there... is that y it's not working?Quote:
Problem Description:
This problem occurs when you are trying to scan for updates. When you scan the machine for updates, and then click on one of the active links in the left pane, the installation process does not complete.
Resolutions:
This behavior indicates that the scan process encountered an error it could not recover from. You may be able to determine the specific error by looking in the Windows Update.log file, located in the Windows folder on Windows XP, Windows 98, and Windows Millennium Edition. The folder is located in the Winnt folder on Windows 2000.
Temporarily disabling antivirus and firewall programs while you use Windows Update may solve this problem. Be sure to enable them again when you complete the update process.
You might also be able to resolve this issue by deleting all of the content in Program Files\Windowsupdate and Program Files\Windowsupdate\V4 except for the iuhist.xml file located in Program Files\Windowsupdate\V4.
ok. nvm. it's there. i deleted everything except that one xml file. same prob. even with my firewall and av off. wtf!
lol abu cmon read and tell....Quote:

i dont have a prob on mine (OEM legit)
and i got the emule and k++ blocklists in my firewall
with my firewall up and my AV too
and all kinds of ad/spy protection runnin also
guess i'm tyrin to say that security features shouldn't block you out
unless you got ms's update site blocked
or your cd key/serial is black listed
well reading the thread i would guess you dont have the site blocked :">

set all your IE setings to default, see if that helps
maybe have to run the check disc for errors
if all fails, maybe change the key
(heard this has to be done with certain installs of xp pro)
wat's the best disc checker thing? i have norton systemworks 2k4 installed
chkdsk /r
;)
last night i recieved a similar error message. My OS is XP Home (legitimate version) and I have used windows update successfully before with this install. It only seems to be a recent problem though I cant pinpoint anything exactly.
go to start>my computer>right click the primary drive>properties>tools
select 'check disc for errors' or 'error checking' (you'll have to schedule it to run at next startup)
then reboot, takes about 30-45 mins. to complete
and if you are on a (rack, read this

after some rejigging and playing around I found the error was because of an incorrectly configured firewall. I would suggest a reinstall of your firewall as the easiest solution. I doubt it would be to do with disc errors
so it should work if i turn off my firewall rite? well, not working hereQuote:

Shutting down your firewall isn't enough. After shutting it down, look in the taskmanager. Problably there is still a part of the firewall active (e.g. if I turn off ZAPro it could be that VSmon stays active).
Agreed. I tried checking with the firewall off and it didnt work. I unistalled the firewall then it worked. Then install again with default options and try again.Quote:

I had same problem turned out i had a virus trying to stop me pacthing the PC so the virus could not spread have u looked into a virus scan i used AVG 7
i had a similar problem a few weeks ago on my old computer, it turned out that the problem was that teh date wasnt set right. Try checking if the date is right.
Delete the Temporary Internet Files and Internet History stored and try again. If that doesnt work look at your internet settings.
If the problem is not resolved use SYSTEM RESTORE. I've told this about a million times to people. System Restore is for when the computer developes probs. like this so use it. It will save you a lot of time and effort trying to seek a solution.
im getting the same prob, is ur windows a copy, and is it xpQuote:
