I would like to know why so many people put underscores in between each word in their filenames ?
Is there a good reason for it ?
Because it pisses me off as I have extra work to do to remove them or when making lists etc.
PS some people do the same only with dashes. I think dashes shoudl be kept for emphasing sapce between sections. Eg James Bond - View To A Kill.

:lol: I couldn't agree more. I guess it goes back to the days of DOS/Windows 3.1 when you weren't allowed to have spaces in your filenames. But now that a vast majority of PC users have Win95 or higher, I see no reason to use underscores or periods to seperate words. That annoys me too. I always change them to real titles.

I would think its the same reason why KaZaa (mines 2.4.2) doesn't when you try and put a space in your user name,Nero is the same (5.5 up)if you name it just before cutting no space you have to underline.

if you're really bothered about them, i'm sure you could remove the underscores or replace them with spaces using something like excel
just go to find & replace, find as "_" and replace as " "

On many Linux/Unix servers (and older windows OS), spaces in filenames are not allowed. This is done to insure compatibility with any system.

Yep, when I first started building web pages I used geoshities and they DO NOT allow spaces (%20) in file names, not sure exactly why some servers don't allow it, for some strange reason a space in between a file name on my server = %20 , anyone know why?Quote:

Something I just thought of,... if you where to type the link above with a space on this forum, instaid of the %20 it would look like this " http://nemo.yahoo-help.com/ne mo.jpg ", that being a broken link, I guess that would be a good reason for under scores and dashes but, if you copy and paste " http://nemo.yahoo-help.com/ne mo.jpg " into your browser it should put the %20 for you automatically.

it also happens on nero when people have not used the "file name length" option correctly and not using the correct iso standard (dos or ascii) then it adds the old dos uderscore for you .
but lets face it until there is a standard get ready for even more naming variations from those with older operating systems or who are just lazy :ph34r:
yes everybody might not be using newer systems but hinting at that or saying linux does not understand them without the underscore is a LIE
i have a mixed environment network and i have NEVER had problems naming the files correctly or been lazy enuff to imply that i am not able to do it because i use a slightly different operating system
if you use the systems correctly and apply common sense in updating there is no problems unless you are telling me that a p2 mmx or cyrix or whatever other crap you use can handle broadband/high speed/downloading but cannot name a file correctly because of the software/o.s :frusty: :frusty: :frusty:
is it me or did there used to be a decent knowledge base on here that has eroded away almost to nothing with just a handful of the old "intelligent crew" left
now it seems that anyone can go ahead and type stuff even if it is painfully incorrect :angry:
and as for servers not recognising spaces and needing underscores "yeh right if we are all using redhat v1 and miami vice is a new programme and reagan is in the white house".

maybe i do not use spaces in filenames cause of remembering these days :D
and because sometimes i shared files with some friends of mine :huh: ... so i give the url to them :P ... and spaces in url are NOT allowed.
maybe you uses iexplorer, ok it changes the space to %20, but not all browsers do that.
put an image on your website, put a space in its filename and view it with different browsers

so if you have a url file that is a movie it needs undescores..if it is just a standard non-url mpeg avi etc..the it doesn't..right?
not asking why some people do it for the good old days..just asking why it would need to be done now....

Calm down and have a beer or hire a prostitute but keep it calm and civil, for Christ sakes. :lol: BTW, FAT has nothing to do with "power to play." ;) You can format a Pentium 100MHz with FAT32 or NTFS and it's still too slow to play MPEG-4. But you can use it to rip and convert (provided you follow the correct naming convention if you're using FAT16) but it could take days to complete its task. PeaceQuote:

You are absolutely correct. We're talking about movies that are being shared on Kazaa, eMule, or Bittorrent. Because they are not part of a URL, there is no reason to use underscores instead of spaces. The only thing to remember is if you create a torrent, then it will be posted on a website as a URL so it should not have spaces because it might not work in a non-IE browser.Quote:

how about this-- movie distro groups not only distribute the movie files, but often they release nfo, readme, and subtitle files to go along with those. okay, you're most likely not going to see a 700mb file hosted on an HTTP server (although you might find 'em on FTP servers that are not set up to use spaces in file names).
but you WILL find the nfo/readme/sub files distributed separately through HTTP servers-- they prolly omit spaces for the sake of consistency, so those files will hopefully retain the same name as the movie files as they spread through the internet by whatever means (including websites).

you can do what ever you want ... you can uses spaces or other characters ... but there are "rules" made by working things well and if you do not know the rules maybe it makes you wonder about why something doesn't work.
