I think a great sports person makes you want to watch a game simply because they are there and even though the team sucks.
For me, that would have to have been Barry Sanders. I couldn't care less about the Detroit "suckass" Lions, but if Barry was playing, I was watching.
Michael Jordan is the other, I used to watch Bulls games simply to wait for those 5-6 magical moments per game.
oooooooh yeah... them 5-6 magical seconds before the end...Quote:

Who the hell is Alan Shearer?
Anyway
Michael Jordan - got me playing basketball, he was amazing.
Barry Sanders - great running back and just up and left the game; very weird
Allen Iverson - coming out of high school, he was the #1 football and basketball player in Virginia. He was amazing in the Urban Coalition (scoring 40 points a game) then at G'Town U and he is amzing now. The new breed of basketball player.
Pele - probably the greatest soccer player.
Shaquille O'Neal - simply unstoppable
I think you may get a better response Busyman if you say.Quote:

There are sportsmen in every country in the world. All are not that well known.

Then he played for the Washington Wizards, in my home town.
Thierry Henry
Surely the best FOOTBALL player in the world at the moment!!
and I don't support Arsenal!!
That debate could go on all night Billy. I personally think it is Zinedine Zidane. :)Quote:

Yeah Zidane is very good but on recent form this season I think Thierry has overtaken him!
Alan Shearer Toooo. + Raul
hmmm now this is tough since I love sports....
Maradona - sorry but it's NOT Pelé. Maradona played in a more competitive time.
Raul, Roberto Carlos, Ronaldo, Figo, Zidane, Beckham, Ronald and Frank de Boer, Danny Blind, Ronald Koeman, Frank Rijkaard, Dennis Bergkamp, Patrick Kluivert, Franz Beckenbauer, Lothar Matteus, Thierry Henry, Juan Román Riquelme, Sebastián Verón, Gabriel Omar Batistuta, Totti, Vincenzo Montella, Paolo Maldini, Bageri (can't remember the name..... defender of Italy national team). Bleh many much..... and too much :D
Andre Agassi - btw he wasn't such a wuss like Pistol Pete.... why the feck did Pistol pete retire....n0ob
Michael Jordan, Allen Iverson, Reggie Miller, Pat Ewing, Larry Bird.
Lots more.... just can't remember :D
Unstoppable, but not very likable. I can appreciate his ability, but I can't root for him at all. That's another reason why I like Barry-humility and class.Quote:

henrik larsson is the king of kings.
Andre Agassi, Pistol Pete- that's two different sports (if you're talking about Pete Maravich)Quote:

I like Shaquille more than Kobe that's for sure.
Shaq will have fun with the fellas. I met him in Philly at the All-Star Gala and he's pretty much a personable basketball player. He is monotone in interviews if that's what you mean by not very likable.
Kobe is an arrogant ass.
edit: @DWk - I didn't know that.
And people SAID he was the next MJ <_<Quote:

edit - @busyman - well that's true as far as I know. I'm not a fan of him but a couple of friends called him like that.
Kim Pai Tong :01:
sighhhh Who the hell is Kim Pai Tong?
Table Tennis :P
I really haven't had a favorite "Sportsman" in quite a while.
Brett Favre would, I suppose, fit the bill currently.
Barry Sanders was truly one of a kind.
My son was a Punt, Pass and Kick competitor every year he was eligible (age 8 thru 13, at the time), and, as the State finals were held at the Silverdome, he met all the Lions, and Barry, who was normally very reticent around fans and in public, chose my son out, as he was the only PPK competitor to attend every year.
The competitors would mingle in the stadium tunnel with the players just before the game and again right before the half.
Barry would stop every time and greet my son by name and ask how the competition was going. I always thought he was exceptional, not only as a player, but in other, quieter ways, and the way he went out of his way to recognize my son typified him.
For me, l guess the sportsman who has given me the most over the years, from way back in his Cassius Clay days, is Muhammed Ali. He is one of a kind. l really got a boost in the 60's when he refused to go to Vietnam, it was around the time we were throwing rocks at the American Embassy in London to protest the war. ;)
