Could I get an opinion here? I want to know what the best version of Linux is that has a bootloader option installed. Going to put it on my computer today. Also, a homepage where I can get the version would be appreciated, too. :D

There is no best. It depends on your needs. For the newbie/regular user, Mandrake, Slackware, or RedHat would do just fine.
How about one with a good clean interface. Similiar to windows?
Mandrake 9.2Quote:

good luck
Teacher suggested Fedora and Redhat, gonna try Redhat first. Does that XP thing work on any linux version? Turns out the damn links are down for the Redhat downloads. Guess I'll have to search around for another place to get it.
Try Fedora Core. Its not as good as Red Hat 9, but its really not a good idea too get to attached to red hat 9 right now as Fedora will eventually supercede that.
And try a mirror site. Their faster anyway.

edit: as far as i know it works on any linux distro
Yeah Mandrake seems to be the best. But what do you guys think of Lindows?
Lindows is crap and always will be crap until it comes up with it's own respectable name and stop using microsoft as a scapegoat. :)Quote:

In my opinion, Lindows trys to hard to be like windows. It hides so much from you that you might as well stick with windows to begin with. of course this was about 2-3 years ago that i tried it out.
my advice is to give Fedora Core 1 a try
go here for the torrents to the iso's
or to linuxiso.org for standard methods of download
Different distros are little more the kernel, the shell, and features that make distros unique.
I could take Mandrake, and turn it into Gentoo if I felt like it. If you want full customizaiblity, build your own distro.
You mean coattail- (or is it dick-) rider, right? :DQuote:

If everyone that used linux would just understand that, they would look at it with a whole different perspective.Quote:

You pretty much summed it up. You can take any distro of linux and make it your own.............its just that simple.
Man, I'm feeling holy.Quote:

You're saying Fedora will be better than Redhat in the future?
Also, how does updating the OS work?
Fedora IS practically RedHat. They are discontinuing (or already did, can't tell for sure) RedHat, and Fedora is next in line :)Quote:

Ah. Okay. I'm still a newby when it comes to computers, sorta. So what about updating Fedora? Is it like windows in that it has an auto update thing?
You update via the Red Hat Network or rhn. :)Quote:

No idea. But what DWk, shn, and others mean is that Fedora will be the superset of RedHat -- sort of like C++ is a superset to C.
Sorta like a patch?Quote:

I had Red Hat 9 for a short while. Updating wasn't more difficult than updating Windows. When you log on, you should see Green icon, and I believe it turns red if updates are available. It'll mention updating. It's basically a wizard, just point and click. RPMs (Red Hat Packages) are real easy. :D
You just have to sign up for the free updates. All the info you need should be at the Red Hat Site.

Isn't the RedHat version gonna be paid for and the Fedora the free one?Quote:

If anybody here ends up installing Fedora, then you can't go wrong with this site.
They have all the Fedora tutorials you will need get your Fedora box running some great apps. http://fedoranews.org/
Btw, Fedora has a problem with rhn applet. You can correct it here
http://fedoranews.org/tchung/howto/2003-12...hn-applet.shtml
And also the red hat network can be really slow at times. You can change the servers it uses by editing a config file. I forget which one it is at the moment but with Red hat 9 and fedora I never really used rhn.
Yum can update your system a lot quicker :)
i tried getting yum but something conflicts with atrpms and atrpms is needed by automake
so im going to try to update with rhn, but i need to know the port number so i can open it, i cant find it, i did a search
It has nothing to do with you.Quote:

It's a Red Hat problem, their ssl certs expired some time last year. Go here and install the latest up2date packages and your problems will be solved :)
