In a daring move to pep up performance on thier P4's, Intel have decieded to redesign the forthcomong P4 'Prescott' chip and kit it out with a larger pipeline. This should make it run considerably faster than most other chips in the P4 line. In fact, tecchies reckon it should clock in at the 3.4GHz mark - add to that the upped cache it'll have and this think looks set to shift. Current P4's have 512kb cache; Prescott will top that wil a 1Gig job. It will also feature better hyperthreading, which lets a chipprocess applications simultaneously, and a new multimedia instructions for video and music processing. Whether its going to simply smoke or going up in flames remains to be seen, though.
The Prescott chip is due to be released on 2nd Feb but could these last minute alterations cause a delay? After all it is pretty major surgery. Another thing is exactly what difference will we fine between this sparkly new P4 and the equivlents from, say, AMD who are allready packing soime chips with serious clout at considerably more reasonable prices? One upshot of the Prescott's lanch wil be that all the 'inferior' lower spec P4 chips should come down to a more pocketable price.
