you should stick with win 98 on a pentium 2. its a little too slow for XP. that could be some of the problem, and the fact you got a 160gb hard drive. the bios may not like that big of a drive.
it doesnt like that big drive that why i got a controller card to fix it but it didnt help either.
u dont have enough ram to run win xp pro u need at least 256
Your chipset and/or bios (ie your motherboard) may not natively support such a large drive, you should check you have the latest version of your motherboards bios and check what your motherboard is capable of handling.
Win98 can i think handle drives that large, if not WinXP won't run well at all with the computer specs you have, maybe windows 2000 would be a bit better or make the plunge with linux.
Edit: If you don't know what motherboard you have, try checking the emachines website with your computers product id. or post the details of your computer here and someone might be able to help.
Edit2: I just had a quick look and i think win98 can handle drives up to 512GB, but there is an error in the version of fdisk shipped with win98 which will report the size for drives > 64GB as 64GB- size of drive.
thats a very weird combination:
p2
64mb ram
160 gb hdd
ok i will post the specs in a lil while
We ran a fdisk on it and it now syas error installing os. help?
Your going backwards here after using fdisk which I think may have been from your '98 system did you format ?
Which one XP or '98 ?Quote:
error installing os
never mind win 98 is back on it now thanx for the help
You can run XP with less than 256MB of RAM, that is just the minimal recommendation to run XP. ;)Quote:

YEP  didn't think win98 supported large harddrives like 160 gb without a bios upgrade?Quote:

Well, any OS is reliant on the BIOS recognising hardware.
An upgrade to the BIOS enabling it to access newer hardware doesn't necessarily mean that the OS (any OS) will support it.

Ok, I had the wrong specs in my last post, it does support a minimal of 64MB.
And yes I have ran XP with 128MB
