Were You The First One To Have Internet

Tell me your story. I'd love to hear it.

Here's mine...

I remember back in the mid/early 1990's that I joined an internet service for $10.00 a month. Limited 8-hours of service a day, on a 28.8 modem. I had my brand new intel 486-60mHz computer with the newest technology, a 2X CDROM!! I just upgraded to Windows95 on my 210Mb Hard Drive. I also upgraded to 8Mb of RAM, double the original speed. A year later, I spent $200, to get a better CPU for it, The 100Mhz intel chip with MMX!

Everyone I worked with, or socialized with thought, I was a high-tec geek for "belonging to the internet". As a matter of fact, I remember showing a fellow employee a few interesting articles and photos, and his sarcastic comment was, "Did you get that from the INTERNET?", Trying to make fun of me. It didn't work. It didn't bother me in the slightest way. He absolutely had no idea what the internet was (back then, it was a new term to most people). I knew then what most people know now. I am sure that guy today, has broadband internet, and is addicted like hell. Who is the geek now?

To all of the people in their mid 30's. Don't you wish you knew then (at the age of 17), what you know now?

i think i was in elementary or middle school then... i wasn&#39;t allowed on for some reason <_<

then that slowly changed... then i got caught looking at porno in 6th grade :P ... my dad browsed through th temporary internet files, i didn&#39;t know to delete the temp. files, i didn&#39;t even know they were there. i knew about the history, but not the temp. that was bad :"> got a long lecture about that.. the thing is, i didn&#39;t know how to enjoy it at that point in time, just kinda had this instinct to type in "sex" in yahoo...

ahh... good all yahoo days...

any1 else remember yahoo being the #1 search site?

oh yeah, so i guess that has nothing to do with the topic, just my first sort of experience with the internet. nvm. :lol: :rolleyes:

I had all the amiga...consoles..etc
Decided to get a pc and invested in a PENTIUM 75 (lol)
£1,200 &#33;&#33;&#33;
I got loads of credit card numbers and scammed Compuserve
and AOL for about a year...(free trials)
I was the first out all my mates to go on the net and they all
called me a freak..
I had the house box room and crammed loads of mates in as they
wanted to see what the net was all about &#33;&#33;
I think seeing a picture of some womans breasts was the clincher.
They now all have the internet and are addicted &#33;&#33;

Your Dad is probably my age. Since the internet wasn&#39;t invented when he was your age, he probably had a Girlie Magazine stashed somewhere. It ain&#39;t much different then or now.

My best friend was a total idiot when it came to computers. Wanted nothing to do with them at all.

Until...

I showed him the internet and some breasts. Within a week&#39;s time, he spent &#036;400.00 on a PC and signed up with an ISP.

Today he is very literate with the computer, and uses it for everything from writing essays to balancing his accounts.

Strange, in what it takes, to get somebody motivated to get into the computer scene.

When they first invented the Internet, they&#39;ve found out I&#39;ve already been logged on for some time. :D :ph34r:

Well, my story is quite boring... but if you said you wanted to hear it... when i got my first own comp, some of my friends already had internet. We didn&#39;t &#39;cause my dad&#39;s old-fashioned and he wouldn&#39;t agree to waste any money on something that he considered utterly useless. I lived about 2 years without a connection (in Canada), but then things changed and my family came back to Israel. That&#39;s when i desperately needed to talk to my Canadian friends and so i found a free ISP... but that ISP didn&#39;t last long &#39;cause they lived on ads and pretty soon went out of business. So then i lived another half-year without the internet (during that time Napster was shut down), but then i finally found a no-contract ISP (pay for every minute, no additional fees - 56k)... and surfed less than an hour a day (that was cheap, i could afford it myself), and a few months later i showed my dad what the internet has to offer and he finally agreed to get a crappy 56k connection. About a year later my dad promised to get me a new comp but during the summer i made enough money to buy the comp myself, so we agreed that he&#39;d use the money he saved off for the comp for a better internet connection... and after some time he agreed to keep this connection forever... ADSL rulez :)

I don&#39;t really understand why you want to know that but here&#39;s my story. I got my first connection in the mid 90s (1994 or 95 ?) with a 14.4 modem when I was a student. My father, working for the administration, was one of the people who connected France to the network in the early 90s&#39; (?).

I was quite active in publishing surrealist poetry on the web, then I moved out of France and lost my connection (around 1997). When I came back everybody had a connection and my poetry pages had disappeared due to the stupid lawyers of some book editors, who didn&#39;t realize that they were selling more books thanks to my web site... World had changed.

Now I use internet mainly for work & some political activities.

Late bloomer. But future generations will regard us as the naive core.

Back ~ 1995 i saved up to buy my first comp for when i entered HS ... my step-dad was very old fashioned and said it was a waste of money ... i got a p-120 ... it took me like 2 years to convince my mom to let me get the internet ... I ended up paying for it myself ... through her ... and i surfed with my 28.8 ... started in the pirate scene on fserves back then ... been on IRC pretty much ever since ... wow ... just realized i have been on IRC for almsot 10 years ... the time i have wasted online ... wow ...

No. I wasn't the first one to have internet.

I remember thinking the internet was only yahoo. I would go to my friends house and we would play spades online.
