i'm really, really thinking it's time to upgrade to a dvd-rw! does anyone know when the 12x come out? got a link? which dvd-rw's are the best? and why? does it matter? is lite-on a good one to get? maybe plextor? what does dvd dual drive mean? example
was thinking of either this one or this one. does it matter?
oh, another question. what is the difference between dvd-rw+ and dvd-rw- ?

16x should be out by the end of the year, and that will be the last major advancement for a while. 16x (according to what ive heard) is the fastest safe speed for the disc and the motor. any faster and the disk will shatter with even the most miniscule imperfection (like a 0.2mm chipping from the inner edge of the DVD)
they can only increase speeds by adding more lasers or by sabilizing motors+disks, which will boost disk prices by quite a lot (ever wonder why the highest DVD-ROM speed is 16x?) so wait till late this year and we should see 16x drives. get 1 then.

hmm, i always did wonder why they werent making faster dvd-rom drives...i always though that it was becuase at teh moment, theyre absolutely useless :huh: well, unless your trying to rip the dvds, then u want them to go faster...
+r and -r are kind of 2 different types of disks
in general players will play either, but to be safe go for one which does both.
to burn a full disk @ 8x takes like 15minutes (i think, though my heads gone blank) so tbh its fast enough really.
I have a lite-on 401s, which I have firmware flashed (run a couple of windows progs to change the burners internal workings) to make it into an 811. This is easy to do, and may save you a few quid (though it does invalidate the warranty - think overclocking it)
Whatever you decide, make sure you try loads of different types/makes of disk and settle upon one which works the best for you.
The easiest way to think of the differences between Dvd+r and Dvd-r is to think in terms of them having different filesystems (like fat vs. ntfs)
The Dvd-r standard is also more universal to the Dvd-rom standard and that is why it can be read in more Dvd Players.

DVD-Ram is outdated and unless u have a really good use for it dont get it. if u do intend on getting it, u are looking for a burner that supports DVD-Multi (as in, can burn -Rs, -RWs, and -RAMs) and make sure that it does +R(W)s as well)

i will slap u and slap whoever told u that.
DVD-Ram is one of the first standards, and is not compatible with many DVD players. it is ONLY used for backup purposes, and is designed to be used in a little cartridge. no one uses the cartridge anymore and thus it is totally useless as the cartridge enhanced its rewrite life. however, without the cartridge it is about as good as a +RW, but less widely acceped, and soon to be abandoned.
Some ppl even consider dvd-ram a total failure.

The prices are really dropping here in Canada ...... so think new technology is around the corner! But I would look for the plus ? sign before buying also be asking a lot of questions :)

btw dual layered DVD-Rs will be out soon so i think u should wait for those too.
Sorry Atividia I can't type fast . In my post I linked to a artical about dual layer. It mentions the cost per disk as $ 5.00 to $ 6.oo I assume thats American funds Yikes hope they are rw 's :lol:

anyhoo yea dual layers are fairly new so ull need to wait a while for prices to come down. 5-6 USD makes sense for something new. and the technology will be implemented in the +Rs first :)
If we are lucky, some current Dvd +- rw drives will be able to be firmware upgradable.
I read an article over at cdfreaks.com and they said that nec's new duel layer dvd burner was an update of the old model.
We can only hope that they might release an offical firmware update patch! :D

i kinda understand, but then don't. i'm sure once i get hands on i will be ok. and of course some trial and error. anyway, is that lite-on dvd-rw here a good one or no? i can't tell if that is a +/- or not. i see the symbol, is that what i should be looking for?
also, that new dvd writer coming out from sony sounds nice! the one which can record 8.5gb. i'm sure it can, but it WILL be able to record on the old (current) 4.5gb, or whatever, disks...right? if so, maybe i wait for that one, but on the other hand i will probably just get a current writer and play with it and get to know it then upgrade later.
is there something else i should know or look for in purchasing a dvd-rw that hasn't been asked or told? thanks for all u guys' help! much appreciated!!! ;)

yep its a +/- alright, supports everything but dvd-ram, and if you dont need dvd-ram then no worries

Once they are burnt, most dvd-rom drives and home dvd players can't tell the difference between + and - media. It is usually a case that they will either play dvdr or not.
It is more important to get media which is compatible with your burner. This should give you information on what's compatible, which drive did you end up getting? For PS2 or XBox look for ones that say Console reliability is good.
i ended up getting this one. haven't tried it out yet cuz am researching what type of media i should purchase. according to that chart you posted. the memorex dvd-r's play good on everything. so, i guess i will try those. unless, someone has good reason not to. thx.
One of the memorex options is good all round, the other only mixed, make sure you get the right one if you go for those.
But Memorex are likely to be expensive, Princo (who actually produce many of the CD and DVD dyes) are usually good all round and are relatively cheap, though you will probably have to get them mail order.
lol, thx, but i don't really think i will be purchasing dvd's thru the mail. anywho, i like going to frys and spending money i don't have. sure, i don't want to spend an arm and a leg, but maybe the memorex will do. the memorex is 25 pack for $40 and a 50 pack for $70! jeez, so expensive. but is ok i'm sure. once i get into the backing up and burning what needs to be done. thx!
