Got A Grand(cdn) Here's What I Need...

my cmp is 2yrs old. I ain't spending more than a grand.

needed:

motherboard-something I won't have to change if I upgrade again. (I had asus P4 which doesn't use DDR so I got fckd) So one that holds lot of ram+agp(?) slots

processor-I want an amd but I don't want to oc it(save cost of fans). Does that make sense or should I get pentium if no ocing? or should I oc?

ddr ram-dual channel? don't know what the diff is? someone pls explain. :huh:

graphics card-don't want 9800xt($600) but one that will last at good price

dvd burner-I could wait til 16x comes out but I won't be burning often to care about the difference. mostly be using for portable storage.[lrg files, games(farcry)]

120gig hd-got an 80&60gig and I'm outta space. :P that's why I want dvd burner-it'll help me store. I'm getting rid of 60gig its corrupt.

case-not important but i need one that could hold 3 hd 3drives(dvd,dvd burner, cd burner) if I decide to keep things.

Priorities: 1.mobo 2.gfxcard 3.processor ...5.case

any suggestions advice will help greatly.

You'll prolly never install more than 1 GB of RAM so even two slots will do...1 AGP slot is the norm.

I think a 9600XT gives you the most bang for the buck, but if you want to go the extra $50, a 9800Pro would be nice.
None of them "last"...they are ALL obsolete the second you buy them...

I think you'd be surprised how much a nice case matters. Removable motherboard trays are sweet. Space for fans is good (although you will almost certainly have to remove the factory grills) as are removable HDD racks. Don't go cheap here...you'll regret sooner rather than later.

no ide slots needed, thats very old technology. pci slots arent really too needed becuase of everything being onboard these days, but id still go for 5 which is standard these days. agp slot for sure. might wanna wait a while for pci express, which will replace pci and agp.

for processor, well it depends which company you like better, amd or intel. The amd processors tend to give more bang for your buck. if you have the money, fgo for an athlon 64 fx 53&#092;51&#092; or amd 64 3400+. They give around the same performance as teh pentium 4 cpus of the same price range, but thats in 32bit software, and in 64bit it will be veyr much improved...

AMD 64.

Which means of course that you will need PC3200 memory or better, not PC2700 as suggested by Singaboiy. And you will want 1GB for when 64-bit windows comes out (minimum spec I believe) so get 2x512MB for full dual channel operation, or a mobo with 4 memory slots so you can get 2x256MB now and add the same later.

Here&#39;s a link to AMD recommended motherboards. It varies depending on which level of processor you select.

it only makes sense if you are preparing for 3yrs from now
when 64 bit will be used to its abilities.

But amd 2700+ will be enough to play games and run graphic design programs, right?

64bit seems more than I&#39;ll ever need. Or is it?

Another question: should I order online or through a computer store and get them
to order and put together the parts?
I live in Can the currency exchange plus S&H seems to offset the low prices. Or
am I totally wrong.

u dont seem like a newbie, most newbies are always saying that buying OEM is teh cheapest way <_< lol.

go 64bit if u can afford it. if your not going 64bit though, then the best deal is to buy a 2500+ and OC it to 3200+, which is easily acheiveable using stock cooling and pc3200 ram. a lot of members on this board have acheived this and higher, and I have also done this with a computer I built for my aunt. The temps are pretty good too.

not sure bout edd and non ecc.

sata is the fasterm and newer type of interface for connecting the hard drive. will offer slighty better performance, plus u wont have those bulky big ide ribbon cables (well unless you get rounded ones)

for a motherboard, i beleive that the via kt800 (think thats it, well teh latest via chipset anyway) is the current leader for motherboard chipsets, and the nvidia nforce 3 is the next best i beleive. Good companies are abit, asus and gigabyte (there are a few other good companies, but these are the main ones).

Just want to make sure you realise that Athlon 64 uses a different socket (socket 762) from Athlon XP. They are not interchangeable so you need to decide which to go for.

Top Athlon 64&#39;s are rated in exactly the same way as Athlon XP&#39;s, so if you get a 2800 version of each you should get the same performance. But that all changes when you switch to full 64 bit operation. Reports from Linux 64-bit operations suggest up to 50% improvement in performance. This sounds a lot to me, but some improvement is likely.

trillscout,where are you from in Canada? I know of a couple of shops near me that have good prices but once you factor in shipping the prices may not be so good.

As for going 64bit.I personally wouldn&#39;t bother.By the time the 64 bit programs really start to be the norm your system will likely be outdated anyway.You likley won&#39;t see 64bit windows for a couple of years,you know how fast eveything gets outdated relating to computers.
Myself I would get an AthlonXP 2500+,Asus A7N8X deluxe,512-1 gig of ram (either kingston hyperX,OCZ,mushkin etc)120 gig Western Digital 8mb cache harddrive,LG 8x dvd +/-/ram burner (they are on sale for 109 at my local shop),Radeon 9600Pro.That&#39;s about a grand worth of stuff locally for me.I&#39;ll calculate it all up and see.

Athlon XP2500+ = 118.78
Asus A7N8X deluxe =149.39
Mushkin 512mb dual channel PC3200 kit=231.00
120 gig WD 8mb cache=126.78
Sapphire 9600Pro = 189.44

Total is 937.70


So add a case with PSU for 39+tax =44.85 and you still fall under 1000.00

The 2500+ is more close to a 2.5 gig processor.I have one in my machine and I love it. My machine works smooth and is fast.
Have you tried www.ncix.com? Their prices are pretty close to equivalent to my local shops prices.They actually base some of their prices on his on occasion,they kinda got a price war going on.
As for the Mushkin ram,that is only 512 mb(2x256) but that stuff is super expensive to begin with.You could get some elixer,infineon etc for 150 bucks or so for 512 but the mushkin is much better.Probably capapble of better timing and much more efficient than the generic brands.

PS,my prices had 15% tax on them also because I am in Nova Scotia so your prices would be abit lower due to the way your taxes are set up.I believe you just pay 7% don&#39;t you?
