I recently installed a 256 meg ram in my computer bringing the total to 384 megs. 2 days later my computer says i have only 368. Dont understand this. where is the other 16 rams of memory?

well i have a Duron900mhz computer and when I check it using Sis Sandra it only tells me i got a 896mhz cpu and the ram is a little bit off... Don't worry too much about it, its suppose to be like that, im not too sure why though
Sounds like the RAM is bad. Sometimes only a few sectors will go bad, and the chip will still work. However, you better replace it now before it goes completely bad.--

ok i guess ill remove the ram and return it to the store for a refund.
the guy at the computer store says this is normal that virtual memory sometimes uses the ram. Does this sound right or is he trying to get out of replacing the ram.

Your computer uses some of the RAM before it starts Windows. (Depends on your ONBoard RAM!)
If your board doesn't have enough of itself it will take some from your installed RAM!
Don't worry... it's normal! If your RAM is bad your computer will beep or give errors! Does it do that? I don't think so!
thanks rockton. computer works fine. it just shows missing memory.. ill keep going seems to work fine.
Are you sure that you don't have a built-in video card on your motherboard? It uses your system memory for video memory, and that amount will be subtracted from your available memory.
If you are checking on bootup, it should display the full amount of ram minus 1 (usually), or check in your bios. If its off in there, then it truely is bad. Virtual memory has nothing to do till the os boots up. This is where you should be checking your ram anyway, not in the os, if you think it is messed up.

Im wondering since were on the topic of RAM,
I want to buy RAM soon and I dont remeber what kind I have in there..Is there a way to check what kind it is without looking at the chip and knowing what kind it is??
This bios should tell you the type of ram too. Check the manual or the manufacturer's website.Quote:

i agree. u probably use 16 meg for ur onboard video, as for ram, get sisoft sandra, that prog may well tell u what memory u are usinga nd what th mb can take, even if it doesn't it will give you your mb details and u can contact the manufacturor

So I went into BIOs and all I could figure out was in Advanced Chipset area theres the AGP Slot stuff for my Vid card and then theres another thing there about SD Cache and stuff..Does that mean I have SDram? I really don't know.
It's tough to say. Maybe some screen captures would help us out. :D
i think memory is reserved by the AGP slot, i read it somewhere, i think something like that.
basically its normal, if you're not sure try finding a technical website, they might know more
It doesn't matter how much memory is dedicated to other components.. Total installed RAM should be shown.

otherwise in the bios look under intergrated peripherals, on board features, something like that, there should be a setting marked onboard video, vga, something like that, its NOT the AGP slot details, thats for the AGP slot, even though the onboard is also AGP. basically just look down all the settings for a number ending in MB, Sisoft Sandra is on Kazaa, but if your running XP you might be better off downloading the 2002 or earlier version, 2003 pro can be tricky with 98
Can diff versions of DDR memory work with DDR266...like say theres a better form of DDR like DDR2000, will it work??
You can mix different RAM speeds, but all the modules will run at the same speed as the slowest one installed.
