Just wanting to know one thing. For all those people that got letters from their ISP's how long was it from the time you uploaded the offending file and the time you got the letter? I have stopped uploading and downloading movies, but I want to know when I'm "out of the woods" so to speak.
It got to you didn't it? Can't blame you since alot people already are too.
If your that worried, just kick your PC outa the window - that will solve your problems - really, its the only answer if you are worried about being "caught".
I am not being sarcastic or anything - but if ya dont wanna get caught with "copyrighted" material on your PC, then stop DL'ing it.
PS: Make sure you destroy your HDD as well before you do it!

I find it strange that the problem is providing the file but not retrieving it. The person who has the file on his/her computer isn't exactly sitting next to me twisting my arm to make me download - why blame them <_<

.......and as someone was saying you never know whether those many people who you let you use your computer might be downloading things. You might have a reasonable doubt that they might be anyway, who knows?
if they sent you a letter as a warning...they will be watching you now more closely, things like things you upload/download and other stuff you might do onliine...they might watch your connection for two or more weeks...not sure though i do know our ip is now listed "under close watch"..or something like that.

if you delete it there will always be a piece on your HD, if the want the can see what you have done the last 2 years so deleting is no option
There are a number of proggies, free and price-tagged, which will overwrite deleted files. One is Shred-X, which can be DLed from Ziff-Davis. However, recently, I heard a interview with a guy who runs a data recovery firm. He went into all the programs and which ones were more effective, but then he said that the only way to be really sure that nothing at all can be recovered is to physically destroy the drive. He suggested a sledge hammer.
i don't think they will do anything.. but they want to scare ppl into stop downloading copyrighted materail
Okay, so some ppl got warnings from their ISP's, now, they weren't really in trouble for having the material per se, but more in trouble for sharing it. So fine, burn it first, delete it from your hd and don't up and download for awhile. Also, seems to me that ppl are getting in trouble for movies more or less, so, if you get a warning, stop sharing the movies. But until a problem actually arises, I'm not going to stop.

Sharing music and movies is illegal
So there is no need to remove your files from your harddrive at all

Same here, chances of being caught are close to nill anyways. But i still respect those who dont want to share.
i downloaded blue crush and i keep my kazaa on all the time so people can download from then after 3 weeks i got my email from att they said to stop uploading but i called them and told them that i wont stop uploading but then they said that if they get another report from my ip then they will perminetly cancel my acc with them but since then i turned it off cause where i live the only high speed access it att broadband
i think that is going to far all they say in the email is to stop uploading NOT downloading cause in the tv comercial they show people downloadging music, and so when every boady gets the eamil there will be no one to download from. cause they will have the uploading turned off. and also they dont care to much for downloading.Quote:

Let me clarify my post a little bit. I didnt actually get caught or anything. I just shared alot of software and a couple of (popular) movies a whole bunch for about 2 months. I just want to know how long from the time you upload something and when you actually see a letter. I havent been caught (at least that i know of) and was wanting ot know what the delay is from the crime and actually getting caught. that way if say 3 months or however long passes with no letters, I will know I am pretty much safe.
Switch to Filetopia. Use 448 bit Blowfish encryption to lock the ISP out of your download and upload traffic. Also set up a good SOCKS5 proxy with it. FT doesn't have very many users, but the number is growing. If you can live with just hiding your IP, use Kazaa with a SOCKS5 proxy.
Also, programs like Kazaa generate a lot of traffic (especially if you're a supernode or sharing lots of files). It's unlikely that they could afford to hold on to this data for more than a few days.
i HAVE heard of people who share complete movies who get calls from their isp telling them to stop, and i noticed that almost all of those who have gotten letters so far are cable......
i think (maybe im wrong, its just a thought) that DSL and T1-T3 OC48 etc etc etc, since they're single private lines, not shared over a 10MB line.....(or is it 10Mbits...), that they have less chance of getting caught...
Also, as i mentioned above, it looks like the only ones who get calls from the ISP are those who are sharing whole movies, full software, OS'es, MS Office XP, etc etc etc....are the ones who get calls..
seems to me that the RIAA who whoever the fuck is doing all of this could care less about MP3's any more, hell even full albums....that's why they just have a few people put a bunch of fakes out there, instead of taking more drastic measures.....
anyways, bottom line from my point of view, if u share alot of full movies / are a supernode / are on cable, then u probably have a very high chance of getting a call from your ISP...
other than that, I wouldn't be worried, nor am I............ B)

If you're so worried about it, don't download/share movies. Those are what seems to get people "caught."

There are other ways to get the things you want besides the sharman network. I remember when iBlostboy got warned. He stopped sharing on the network, but don't think for a second he isn't still getting most movies before the rest of them even know their out. Make yourself more familiar with newsgroups or direct connection sharing programs and avoid the networks where the seem to do more tracking of such activities.
here's something to try if you live in the states , if you get an email or letter from your ISP about downloading just call up the company and ask who ever is on the other end of the line if they can "take care of it" for you , alot of the general population downloads so its a good chance you might run into someone cool who will just "delet" your little warning from company files. arrrrg it never hurts to ask .

BLOCK MANY/MOST OF THE 'NET COPS' with PEER GUARDIAN or a software firewall that you can enter in blocked ip ranges.
You'll get messages when they TRY to connect to you (if you check the firewall's logs) and you'll be saving a little bandwidth too. :D
I agree with whats being said here i don't live in the states but in europe an i got a warning from my isp i got the email 2-3 days after the day they say i was uploading and yes uploading is all the seemed interested in but from the information they listed i think it could only have been got be someone using kazaa to get connections,view shared folder,get ip address then send this info to the unsuspecting persons isp so the privacy patch helps but if you share it they only need to connect to get the info they need.I still share they can all bollox as far as i'm concerned although if my pc is on so is peerguardian it's blocked 15 ip's so far.... :P

i do not indulge in file sharing. full stop. I may be a little lax in my security regarding parts of my hard drive. If persons with nefarious intent hppen to visit my hard drive, that is terrible and I am sure God will punish them. otherwise what anyone takes from my hard drive has fuck all to do with anyone, in fact I strongly suspect that anyone monitoring theft from my hard drive is themself in breach of the UK data protection Act, I may be wrong, but by god I reckon I can,m win or lose, argue it into a 3 year incredibly expensive lawsuit, so snoop away shithead

Ya, Its something to think about. I share 50-100 gigs, (depending on what i want to spread around), and its all, like, hot off the presses, or stuff that normally gets ya busted. Worries me sometimes. But... I dunno, what can u do... Im not going to stop driving a car cuz I may get in accident... just gotta ride on....

There's an article in the April edition of PCWorld called "NOW THEYRE AFTER YOU: MUSIC COPS TARGET USERS." He basically says we're toast. :unsure: I guess the one thing that can be said for DLing porn is that the producers don't have the resources to come after sharers. :)
