Ya I wonder what they mean by "AOL 9.0 Optimized"
and for the people who want to argue "hey you never used AOL how do you know it sucks" I had and I have used AOL 9
I've used AOL, why the fuck does it come with its own fucking POS broswer, and its hell getting it to work like a normal ISP (dialup with dialup networking then use internet epxlorere or something).
You mean connecting to AOL using PPP. It should work I think. Why would any ISP force you to use some software that can only run on a very limited nunber of OS and make it impossible to connect with other devices. (i.e a dreamcast)Quote:

I've had AOL since 4.0 and I can't cancel the account because my parents are alittle slow and think it's cheaper than broadband. But in a year I will be in college and have a good broadband connection.
Can you tell me if you really have to use their software?Quote:

No you can just connect using AOL then use MSIE but the loading icon will be the AOL logo instead of the earth thingy
I used aol for two whole years, “shit” is the only word that comes to mind
You can't do ICS with it either, and when you get a proxy on it, it won't use any
ports cept' 80 and a few random ones in the thousands...
I had to setup a LAN for a business a few weeks ago - 5 lines all AOL BBer's
fucking idiots
AOL doesnt install, it infests].
Better hope you never have to uninstall it because it leaves some nasty crap hanging round in the registry thats hard to shift.
u got that right! i got a quicktime registy that i cant seem to get off my cpuQuote:

No, that's a lie, I wouldn't.

Mine is faster loading etc than IE, and it has an email virus scanner, I don't have to open a seperate prog for email, I get notified instantly when I get an email, different pages are accessable and lined up the side of my screen, I have a revolving IP :)

i think youve falllen for the aol lies. nothing makes the internet go faster other than a physical upgrade. i cant imagine an aol probably spyware ridden browser can work better than a homegrown microsoft internet browser
No, I ment without installing their software at all. Just put in your dial-up number username/password kind of thing. I am trying to do this on a friends computer and it does not seem to work. :huh:Quote:

yes, get a new isp.

The only way around this i think is to install AOL then you can make a direct connection with your modem.
Thats how i get around it.
Like Jonno, i have AOL here in the UK, and have no problem with it.

What are you talking about AOL has no spyware,
I've tried connecting through the Microsoft dial-up network to AOL but hasn't worked for me at all.
But it sure is a bitch. :PQuote:

Try Earthlink? That's what I have right now, and it's doing me great. I didn't even have to install any of their software.

Found a way to have AOL without the browser, it's called AOLdialer which will come with AOL 10. You can download the beta which is called AOL 9.0 se
go to keyword "beta", sign up, just put anything in for name and address
then go to keyword "upgrade" and download AOL 9.0 se
Here's where I learned about it AOLdialer

Amazing it took aol that long to come out with that, and to top it off you need a beta version?
Everytime I recieved a coaster in the mail I was connecting to aol for my 45 days free without their crappy software. And that was years ago.
Here is what I used. Peng ;)
you might find some great information on this link
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&ie=UTF-...hout%2Bsoftware
google is great ;)
The only thing good about the new aol is the pretty gui. It goes great with the Corona theme and StyleXP.

Always lookin for an excuse to use this one
http://img40.imageshack.us/img40/4527/aol.jpg
:( this is sad im spamming the board with aol :frusty: :frusty:
DO NOT GET AOL 9.0 OPTIMIZED. IT INSTALLS PROGRAMS THAT RUN IN THE BACKGROUND THAT YOU CANNOT CLOSE WITHOUT UNINTSALLING AOL. GET AOL 8, AND STICK WITH IT, DO NOT GET AOL 9.0 OPTIMIZED.Quote:
