I recently had about 356mb on my harddrive. My swap file used to be around 127mb. After I installed my hp printer, I only have like maximum of around 60mb on my harddrive. My swap file is now a whopping 344mb! How do I cut the space down?

in XP:
control panel -> system (in classic view) -> Advanced -> PErformance -> Advanced -> Page file
Other versions of windows should (optimistically) be similar, btw 344 doesn't sound huge to me
whats the "rule" for memory to page file size? something to something?
3 times the size of system (ram) memory you have.
thanks
Depends on who you ask.Quote:

I've read everything from zero ( assuming physical RAM in excess of 512MB) to 1.5x RAM.
Try what you like and see what happens.
What do you gain by upping it? I as far as i know have never bother altering it.
I like to use around half my ram size for a pagefile size on my computer.
On my other ones, it is just a bit more than the total amount of ram.
They are all set to 300mb....
edit: Oh yeah, and use the same number as min and max, it stops fragmentation, which means it can be read faster, and makes system performance faster.
i dun get this whole thing...can someone please explain all this page hard drive stuff to me?? thx
It is explained the best I could do in my pinned guide (link in sig). :)Quote:

hmm....im still confused....i have 1 gb of ram, how should i change my page file or whatever? does this help make yor computer faster?? thx for the help
turn off system restore this frees up more space
if I turn it off, does that mean i cant make a restore point or restore it to an early point? cuz i sometimes need that...oh and can someone tell me how to set up my page file thing?
The size and configuration of the page file is the subject of heated debate.
EVERYONE will tell you the "best way " to manage it, problem is, they will tell you different things.
Try whatever seems most logical to you and then change as necessary.
It's not going to make a huge ( or even noticable) difference anyway...as long as the system doesn't start griping about low memory, you'll never tell.
