What chip?
Most chpis will have a safe protect feature that it will shut itself down at a certain temp. This temp can vary anywhere between 65C and 85C depending on the chip
Well I just wanted a general range
I'm planing to OC a Athlon XP
thanks
I would say stay under 60°C to be safe. If you can set an automatic shutdown with your motherboard then set it to shutdown at 65 or 70°C.
The question should be what temp it should hold when running.
T-birds and some xp's burn at 95c, some xp's at 85c, if I remember correctly.
But exact figures doesn't matter as you don't what it hit temps anywhere near that high.
If yours ran at 50c idle, I'd say that was a little bit hot.
would most motherboards have that type of setting?
My XP 2600+ runs at 52 or 51 idling.. I thought that was normal? I'm not a big OC'er nor do I spend any money on cooling except that I have 4 case fans..
I prefer to have mine run idle at least a bit below 50c, preferably below 40c. And around 50c at the very most under full load.Quote:

The ideal would be to have it run close to room temperature, but that requires a lot. At any rate, if it isn't OC'd 50c is definitely a bit high, but not a cause to worry (and probably quite normal).
What I want is to have it run no more than 5 degrees higher than my mobo, this is a personal preference tho'.

that only with Intel's........... AMD doesnt have that feature :(
most decent motherboards, yes...... if you have an AMD, that your only protection :(Quote:

right now i dont have my 2600+ OCed (will be doing so soon though ;))
it runs (load) @ 46 C
if yours runs idle @ 52, dont worry....... just watch the temps closely under full load...... an make sure you have the shutdown temps set

I thought the A64's did the thermal shutdown thing at 70c.

never heard of that......... could very well be true though..... with CPU's that expensive, they SHOULD add that feature ;)

I guess they do. Good I suppose.Quote:
On-die thermal throttling
I wonder if all 64's have it, 'cos some aren't expensive nowadays.

On-die thermal throttling, is that like cool N quiet or something else entirely?

It means that if your heatsink was to fall off it wouldn't fry your chip.
Er, yes
It seems to be the same thing as on P4's, ie that it throttles the clockfrequency if it overheats, like it will if the cooling falls off.
Better than the instant shutdown at 70c I thought they had at first.
The regular Athlon XP's also have the thermal throttling option. this turns down the speed of your cpu if it is running too hot making it not work as hard and giving it time to cool down.
I have this option disabled and have my computer set to shutdown if my cpu temp raches past 65C.
So yes this option is also available for Athlon XP's
On-die?
The Asus board will come with a drive and utilities cd. It will include all the drivers, and a utitily called Asus Probe, which will display all the temps and fan speeds, and you can set warning levels for everything.
This guide shows:
- FSB
- Multiplier
- Names (like Athlon XP 2200+, etc.)
- The different cores
- VOltages
- Max temps
- etc.
bgdawgfoxx - is the board im getting have that
if your getting the a7n8x it does yes......
yeah.Quote:

Ill bring updated drivers and shit on a cd too
ight
amd's run hotter than p4s. it's always a good idea to keep it as low as possible.
an Amd XP mobile will run cooler than a P4
Anyway how do u like ur SP-94?
Haha, me and Mattesca put chop sticks in the fan grills...good idea
http://home.earthlink.net/~bigdawgfo...roke%20Fan.jpg
Ended up breaking 4 blades off and shot them all through the case..then the whole case started vibrating wildly haha
Any body else got any crazy computer stories where they fucked stuff up
Yes, bigdawgfoxx was the one that fucked it up.
What happened to the chop sticks?
Can you still catch flies with them?
The chop sticks r fine didnt even crack them or nothing
they still work fine
may i ask WHY???Quote:

drunk? wasted? a dare?
we were lookin for something to do
haha
It was funny, but when I opened the case some of the fan was in the cpu heatsink and just about every were else
my sp-94 is beastly. gets a bit dusty though. so i have to remove the fan and clean it every month or so. very good temps. rite now, my room temps like 30C ish, and my cpu is running 33C. not bad at all. in winter, it's 26-28C most of the timeQuote:

Just wanted to c how it preformed for u cause Im gettin the SP-97 for my Athlon XP
What r some more spec u have on the SP-94??
wat specs do u mean? i think the 97 is basically the same, although u might get slightly higher temps depending on how far u oc with an amd and wat fan u put on there.
nvm
thanks for the info though, what u think of the fan we broke
lol. waste of a good fan. but fun nonetheless i'm sureQuote:

it was like a dollar, so i really didnt care
Yeah it was some cheap fan.
What are sleeve bearings? thats what they were.
yeah what can you get for a dollar.... wait im remebering all those fast food and 10 10 220 commercials.
sleave bearing is a silent type of fan bearing........ trouble is, they die really quickly.....
yes they die over time and by the use of chopsticks
