Thinking of this from an influence prespective and NOT perhaps what I like (altho I do :) )
1: Chuck Berry did engineer a new style of guitar
2: Jimi Hendrix, he took this further and his creation of feedback/effects/whammy bar/wah wah and tone, touch can still be heard
3: Beatles. I think we all know what they done
4: Nirvana started off the whole grunge-nu metal phase
5: Anthrax/Chili's Began the whole Rap/metal sorta thing

ah, how could I forget the king of blues himself! Robert Johnson, the crossroads man who only appeared in two pictures :)

Kool Herc and Grandmaster Flash for mixing break-beats together and using record decks in an innovative fashion by scratching and cutting. They invented Hip Hop and I can only thank them for that.

the velvet underground(advertising cars and things now/beggers belief)
of course the sex pistols and elvis(only because if you were not a jazz
fan in the late fifties and didnt like the ink spots rock n roll was the teen rebels choice) james brown(good god!) and just for bass, james jamerson,
(i don't know the name of his tribute website of the top of my head but if
