I Caught A Crawfish Just Now.

Here's the odd part:
There are a few miles to the nearest place they usually live, in fact there isn't a lake or such for at least a mile in any direction. Pretty surreal it was, apparently it's been crawling around outside for more than a day


If it hadn't been for a neighbor who happened to pass by as I caught it, I'd have no idea how it got there. She told me they'd been fishing them elsewhere yesterday.

It would seem one of them got away.

The question is what do I do with the sucker?

So far I've put it in a bucket and given it some dogfood.
Pics tomorrow, hopefully. Wouldn't want to leave it there as we have dogs and stuff and it could get nasty I thought.


The neighbor didn't want it, I asked.

I'm thinking I got to find a place to release it.

I actually thought about keeping it, it's pretty cool, but I don't think that'd work out for very long.

Edit@Mr's .........Cook it and eat it dude :01: Drop it in boiling water for about 8-10 mins til it goes bright red/orange :)

Then put it in a sandwhich :D

'tis freaky to hold, but I don't wanna pick it up too much, I know it doesn't have much of a brain, but it doesn't seem right.

Beats this spider i was fiddling with earlier today, and the stick insects I keep.



The neighbors boiled the rest of them btw.

I think they're freshwater rather than salt, aren't they?

It will probably die in the bucket fairly quickly Snny. Best get him to the lake tomorrow :(

And yeah dan you can eat them, they turn red when boiled, problem is you don't kill them before they go in the pot. I don't like it.

Just that I have heard that lobsters make a noise when boiling similar to a scream so I thought they might.

It might just be stuff escaping from the shell though like air or something I guess

Freaky, i didn&#39;t know that, won&#39;t boil it to test tho&#39;.

They tell me the claw meat is the best btw, I think I had some when I was little even.

Salty fishy kind of taste, I think.

Errm in the case of them being boiled I suppose they wouldn&#39;t hurt for long, they go pretty quick when boiled.

Someone told me if you poked the eye of a fish out btw, they&#39;d only remember the pain for about twenty seconds.

Dunno&#39; how they&#39;d test that tho&#39;.

I quite agree, so far in this thread you&#39;ve told us that crayfish are from the sea, crayfish don&#39;t feel pain and a fish dies 60 seconds after you take it out of water.

Thanks, that solves that, the question is: should I fill the bucket with water, or just give it enough to keep it&#39;s gills moist?

The latter way means it can breathe for a longer time perhaps.

On the other hand it should only be overnight.

It&#39;s been out in open air all day I think.

It&#39;s in a bucket, the question is if the bucket, it&#39;s a not a small one holds enough oxygen for it to survive overnight, I have nothing to oxygenate it.

I suppose I could rig something like a hose and the compressor, but having it on all night for one crawfish wouldn&#39;t be practical.

And it has about an inch of water at the bottom and a little rock to climb up on just in case right now.

Just keep it in the bucket, if its dead in the morning its dead in the morning, at least you have tried your best :D
