''without language there is no thought''
Agree or disagree ?
Here's a quote from ''Enduring love'' by Ian McEwan:

It's the first underlined sentance.
i was just curious as to wether you lot think the same ( that you need language in order to think) or you disagree with it ( that you can think without language)

Re: ''without language there is no thought''
You can think about pictures in your mind so language isn't really required to think.

Re: ''without language there is no thought''

It's just as easy to come up with points against it though.

Re: ''without language there is no thought''
Thats just a medium through which our thoughts are translated so we can understand each other surely...

Re: ''without language there is no thought''
I agree.
Language is means of communication. Your thoughts are communicated throughout your brain via synapses. Whether in pictoral form or not. Bees communicate, Cavemen communicated. Every animal capable of cognitive thought communicates. Language is a very broad term.
Without language there could be no thought.

Re: ''without language there is no thought''

i've started a completely serious topic of discussion that im actually interested in :o
and its so hard to prove it wrong, or right for that fact

Done. Can't tell you what it is though . :P
It's relativley easy to prove, a perfect example stated by Manker. Bees "dance" to communicate with each other, yet they have no word based language....unless you define dancing as language.

Dancing is just as valid a language as if the bee spoke and said 'Mate - there's a flower over there'
What about body language, is that not allowed either :P
Edit: Actually, you said it all. Only just realised. Language is not restricted to the spoken word.

Re: ''without language there is no thought''
I have a step son who is deaf, has never spoken or heard language. He was taught to communicate through sign language. He surely had thoughts before he had a language.
Or even a little baby. They communicate their wants and needs, but what of their thoughts?
