I'm doing a report on violence in video games, and I was wondering... what was the first ever rated "M" video game?
EDIT: Also... in your opinion, what do you think is the most violent video game? :gunsmilie

wolfenstein3d, i think. nice sig btw ;)
doom 2, and most violent postal 2 or manhunt
For sure Doom 2 was the first rated "M" game?
@cpt_azad
Thanks, stupid dog. :P
lol, ya
-- didn't wolfenstein 3d come out b4 doom2? or was doom2 the first game to get "M" through ESRB.
I have no idea, and Google won't help either. :(Quote:

Definitly Manhunt is the most violent.
Manhunt
According to the ESRB website Doom (the original) was the first, well it's the first one listed. Listed from newest to oldest so it's a good bet.
ESRB
My first guess was Mortal Kombat but that was way later.
Edit: Last one listed, it's the last one listed, jeez.
Postal 2 and Manhunt.
not manhunt, the question is what was the FIRST EVER game rated as "M". not the most violent.
oh, and doom (original) came out AFTER wolfenstein3d. doesnt make sense, but i guess ESRB didn't give a shit back then (wolf3d), and got more involved when doom came out. and no good sir, i do not know what the "edit" button is :)
Re-read my first post in this thread, I edited it a while ago. :PQuote:

They formed somewhere around the sega 32X days, so it makes sense that Doom was the first one to catch the heat when they ported it to the 32X.
And they've been letting gamers know which games are worth playing (M) and which ones you should stay away from (E) ever since. :D
i believe mortal kombat was the first?
Thanks for the link Haz, my report is looking good. :D
I also think Manhunt is one of the most violent video games.
well, they did give ratings to a lot of games when they were re-released. Wolf 3D would've acquired a rating when it was re-released as a CD-Rom.Quote:

notice that Night Trap is one of the first few games on the list, even though it was originally released a couple of years before the ratings began. in fact Night Trap and Mortal Kombat were two of the main examples that were used by people in the anti-game movement that led to the industry creating the ESRB as a way to regulate itself (i.e. keep the gov't out of it). so, why's Night Trap near the beginning of the list if it's so much older than the ESRB? 'cause Sega re-released the game around that time, and it received a mature rating despite Sega going so far as to censor the new cd.
i don't think it's all that important to figure out which one received a mature rating first. it's prolly more relevant to point out that the first batches of mature-rated games included re-releases of Doom, Night Trap and Mortal Kombat, which were precisely the games that the censorship wonks had been complaining about for the previous year or two.
manhunt is most violent for sure imo
ya manhunt definately is the most violent, i won't even argue there.
good runner up is SOF2, i love the mutilation :D
Ummm Soldier Of Fortune or number 2?
phantasmgoria {sp}or doom
the earilyest I remember from my games
Thrill kill never got released but back then was easy to get a copy for ps 1 and king pin for pc .........
mortal kombat
What does "M" stand for... I'm guessing Mature?
We just have minimuin age ratings on ours the highest being 18.
its 17 here in the states to get a rated mature game :)
Soldier of Fortune 2, i loved going up to a guy shooting his guts out, getting my knife out, and carvin up his face real nice till i saw the brains  no, i'm not a sadist :shifty:Quote:

Thanks for the info everyone. I did my presentation on violence in video games today, it went very well. I talked about the whole issue for a few minutes, then we needed to show a visual, so I rented Manhunt for Xbox, and recorded myself playing it, and showed it to the class.
I got a lot of good responses, the class was actually interested. During the violent stealth kills, the guys would say things like "Damn that was crazy!" and the girls were like "Oh my god!"
In the end I got comments like "great presentation man," and "damn can I borrow that game?" :P
Thanks again. :D
