Can't Burn at 52X, Even Though I Have The Right Stuff
Ok, I bought a pack of 100 CD-R's for around $25. And my CD drive is a 52X/32X/52X. The CDs are 52X/700 MB/80 MIN. It says the CDs are capable of buring at 52X, but the funny thing is, Nero only lets me burn at 40X max. What the hell is goin on? :frusty:

research your burner and get the latest firmware

Damn 25 Big Ones? There is a MicroCenter near by that is charging 10$ for a 100 pack of 52x CD-R's. I need to buy some this weekend.

Arg, It's a Sony CRX230E, and I can't find drivers for it anywhere. :frusty:

when I say research I mean google, also when I say firmware I mean firmware.

Re: Can't Burn at 52X, Even Though I Have The Right Stuff
No, not drivers. Firmware is the software on the drive itself.
Re: Can't Burn at 52X, Even Though I Have The Right Stuff
Sometimes the advertised speed isn't always the real speed you burn at
I have a LG 32X writer, which only burns around 24X

Do you even realize how much of a difference it really make in real life? Only a matter of a few seconds.

Yes, but in that matter of a few seconds, I could go to the fridge and crack me open a fresh cold one, or make a sandwich (Yes, I'm that fast), or even blow my nose. Anyways, I found this in the manual:
*On rare occasions, some discs may not be able to tolerate 52x speed, causing them to break. We recommend that you do not use deeply scratched, brittle, or other discs that may break at 52x speed.
*The Turbo Boost function does not increase read /write speed with CD-RW discs.
1. Insert a disc into the drive.
The speed when you insert a disc is normally 40x speed.
2. Press the Eject button for five seconds.
The Busy indicator blinks twice and the speed switches to 52x speed. (The Turbo Boost function is active.)
Notes
* When you want to write at 52x speed, insert the disc into the drive, activate the Turbo Boost function, and then start writing to the disc.
* When you open the disc tray, the speed reverts to its default of 40x speed.
* The Turbo Boost function does not guarantee a 52x write speed. Depending on the condition of the disc you are using, the speed may be lower.
What a load of crock, I tried that, and it did nothing.

Re: Can't Burn at 52X, Even Though I Have The Right Stuff
It takes longer to do that then the difference in burn time between 40x and 52x.
The faster burn speeds are only used when the very last bit of data is burned to a completely full disk. Only when a full 700 MB reaches it's end of burn.

Does your computer have the capability to run at 52x? I have a semi-old comp and a 16x cd burner and the fastest I ever reached is maybe 13x. Although I did break the burner before I could try this , I activated the DMA setting on my harddrive which speed it up a great deal. Is the DMA on your harddrive and on your burner activated too?

Pentium III @ 1 GHz
384 RAM
I'm pretty sure it can.
Re: Can't Burn at 52X, Even Though I Have The Right Stuff
Heh I got better hardware then you do and I couldnt even get my 16x to burn at 16x. ;) DMA can help speed up the transfer rates. Click here to enable DMA, should you care to. Thats the only thing I can think of besides just toughing it out and remembering nothing does what it's advertised. :frusty:
