Mozilla finally puts a two page ad in the New York Times.
There are finally doing it. I think this would be the first time an open source software has ever been in a newspaper ad or even in "mainstream" media.

Campaign Supported by Community Marketing and Fundraising Aims to Raise Awareness of Mozilla Firefox
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. - December 15th, 2004 - The Mozilla Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving choice and promoting innovation on the Internet, today announced that it has placed a two-page ad in the December 16th edition of the New York Times. The ad, coordinated by Spread Firefox, features the names of the thousands of people worldwide who contributed to the Mozilla Foundation's fundraising campaign to support last month's highly successful launch of the open source Mozilla Firefox 1.0 web browser.
Spread Firefox is the volunteer-run Mozilla advocacy site, with over 50,000 registered members, where community marketing activities are organized to raise awareness and to promote the adoption of Firefox. The Spread Firefox site is powered by the open source CivicSpace web site software. Community members may submit ideas and join volunteer teams by visiting
http://www.spreadfirefox.com.
The design and development of the New York Times ad was led by Christopher Messina, a San Francisco-based designer and a volunteer leader at Spread Firefox.
To date, Firefox has been downloaded by over 11 million people worldwide.

Re: Mozilla finally puts a two page ad in the New York Times.
word of mouth is gonna bring alot more people to firefox but its nice to see someone try to promote firefox to people in business rather then home users.

CNET News.com has an article about the Mozilla Firefox advertisement in the New York Times. Rob Davis, the coordinator of the ad campaign, confirms that it is running late but says that the ad will run by Christmas. The sheer number of donors, all of whom will be named in the advert, is causing problems: each time the design of the ad is edited, it takes around fifteen minutes to rerender. In addition, approximately 1,000 of the 10,000 donors did not correctly submit their names and Davis has to contact each one individually to clarify how they would like to be referred to in the ad. There also appears to be some confusion as to whether the advert will get the sub-$50,000 non-profit advocacy rate or will be charged at the full $130,000+ business rate. In any case, the $250,000 raised will easily cover the cost of the ad and leave plenty of cash left over for the Mozilla Foundation.
In tangentially related news, it appears that while newspaper adverts are all the rage, Firefox users do not click on online ads.
Re: Mozilla finally puts a two page ad in the New York Times.
the paper shouldn't charge that much as it's non profit.
besides... i'm sure mozilla already worked this out witht them before signing a contract, and got the best possible deal.
