You can make your computer startup faster if you
1. type msconfig in the run box in windows located in the start menu.
2. go to start up ... you can turn off most of the things only thing you wanna keep on is your antivirus...
3. Also you kan turn off un need services ..
4. the services and start up programs are just allocating memory when you start up your computer and make it slow...
5. i did this and my computer starts up in couple seconds b4 took like over mins..

If u really want to your comp to boot up faster use bootvis created by microsoft.
I used it and my comp booted up less than half the time it used to just go to http://www.microsoft.com and search for bootvis. You will see improvement for sure.

Mike Lin's Startup Control Panel is also a useful utility for controlling what happens at startup

Bootvis DOES improve start up speeds,you need to trace> optimize system.I have used this for a while now and it cut about 5 seconds from my start up time on XP...so before you go shouting off check your facts ;)Quote:

sorry guys just a little q based on this i have used bootvis (works great btw) i have turned off most things at startup and i have also turned off any unneccessary services and i have defragged, i manage to boot and auto-login now in just under 1minute, on xp home.
however when i load up the bootscreen seems to be messed up it suddenly jumps to the left a bit and the loading animation freezes up, if this screens is currupted i assume that it will slow down my boot up speeds does anyone know how i can restore it without re-installing windows ;)
(oh btw the boot screen was doing this before i made any changes)
It is not working for me? I go to start menu then to run, then run program pops up and I typed "msconfig" and an error bos pops up? saying cannot find the file "msconfig"- I don't understand. I have windows 2000 if that helps. Please help me because i have sooo many programs in my start menu that i need to get rid of.

This is bound to be my fault, but when I tried typing msconfig in the run box in the start menu it said:
'cannot find the file 'msconfig' or (one of its components). make sure that the path and filename name is correct and that all required libraries are available'
What am I doing wrong? I would love to make my startup faster as mine is just ridiculous at the mo!

I forgot to mention that I hav windows 2000 too. I presume that this is an OS difference then and not all my fault!

that is the same problem i had- please if someone knows how to resolve this situation, please do. It will be greatly appreciated as i have 17 programs in my start menu.
try typing services.msc in the run field instead this may work and this is the best way anyway as you should never use msconfig to edit services anyway as this allows u to turn off services VITAL to your OS and therefore ur buggered whereas services.msc will not allow u to turn off services that are vital.
OK heres the thing guys i have done everything mentioned in this thread and im using xp's hibernate mode so when i turn on my puter it loads up and auto logs in and restores all the apps i was running before hand in under 20seconds, anything else i could do? i have become obsessed with speeding up my boot-up, at the moment i am trying to use a hacked xp kernel and that helped a bit but not much :)
no its BOOTVIS that works great - get it from microsoft's and click optimize and it does all that u just mentioned that perfvis does, i think i know the name of the app im running and i run bootvis optimise my system then turn off the services that it requires again cos u only need to optimise about once a week to get full speeds :P

Cheers for the tip Razz. I've had a quick peek but to be honest this is way out of my league. I thought it might be a bit more obvious as to what I wanted to close and what I don't. Msconfig seemed much more simple. I've got so much on automatic start up and I'm a bit worried I might do some serious damage.
What if I stop something from starting that I need and I can't find it (or don't know to do it) to start manually?
I'm still a bit of a computer numpty so unless someone feels like they've got the time to babysit me through this then I think deal with a slow start up.

and i a service is set to manual that means it will start once a program needs it wheras on automatic it start on startup so u dont really have to know where to start all the services but as i said have a look at blackvipers guide on services :)

Most here are talking about services that run in the background and not programs that start when you boot up. To stop programs from starting go to your programs list and look for a folder called start up, open and delete any program you don't want to start at boot up. It won't be removed from your computer, just won't auto start.Quote:

Some programs start by a registry command instead. To stop them use Mike Lin's Startup control as colenmacc suggested.

Taskmonitor
System Tray
Load power Profile
Pchealth
Alogserv.
Your virus scanner is also advisable.

systray, explorer
That is it.
But this is a moot point because those other things do some good.(like backing up your registry for example)
My point being, those other things aren't absolutely necessary for your computer to run. They mainly perform utilitarian tasks.
No offence intended to anyone, I just like runnning my computer as lean & mean as possible. Everything is quicker that way, and, my (Win98)PC never crashes. :D
I run ME-maybe it runs me, instead-and I'm not as handy with my PC as I'd like, but awhile back, I bumped up to 384M ram, and it didn't do for me all I thought it should. I know I have alot of alphabet soup running in the background and cannot really discern what some of it is. Some is obvious, Antivirus, firewall, etc. I know explorer and systray have to be left. I don't need "lean & mean" as you say, but I would like to know what some of this stuff is? I've got a Dell running a factory setup, minus some of the docs and stuff I didn't reload when I warrenteed the HD a while back. Other than that, I just have a standard ration of utilities, anti-virus, and firewall, spybot, etc.Quote:

I have run into this problem on several windows 2000 and xp computers where it can not find the msconfig.exe file. You can download a copy of this file from here:
MSCONFIG
save a copy of it in your windows\system32 folder or your windows folder and that will do the trick. Also if you want to know which tasks you can disable go to this web site and look up the program running to get info on it:

If you choose to use system configuration utility as a startup manager make sure you do not disable remote procedure call under services. Since up to 40 other services report to RPC your computer will not boot up without it. This is the main reason not to use msconfig for this. Use services.msc instead as it will not allow this.
Misconfig is intended as a troubleshooting tool to track down boot up problems. You lose this ability if used as a start up manager. A better plan is use Mike Lin's Control Panel for programs and services.msc for services.Blackviper has the best info. for services.
My programs that auto. start are:
- antivirus
- zonealarm
- update reg.
- pow (popup blocker)
Of about 80 services listed:
- 35 on automatic
- 25 disabled
- 20 manual
go to MSCONFIG and download a copy of the msconfig.exe file from there for your operation system and copy it to the windows folder, or it may be the windows\system32 folder.
That will do the trick. My pc has a copy in both folders :ph34r:
