Lately when I turn on my PC the mobo fan makes a grinding kinda sound, not normal. After I tap it the fan goes back to normal. Is this an omen of things to come? Should I prepare myself for a new mobo purchase?
Thanks.

Just clean or get a new fan.
Wouldnt happen to be an Abit mobo would it?
when my graphics card fan went nuts and started howling like the Beast of Bogmin, i took it out and oiled the bearing, it's fine now
What motherboard is it. A lot of boards work fine with just a heatsink. If it's not a board where there's airflow at the heatsink then just change the fan.
The fan in my oldest comptuer is like that (the cpu fan, there is no motherboard fan or even heatsink for that matter :P).
I tried cleaning it and oiling but to it has no effect. I've leartn to live with it since I haven't seen that small of fans in stores ever.
Replace it with a larger one.Quote:

30 seconds to find this
If its a motherboard like an Abit NF7-S, which has a specality fan for the North bridge, then A. You wouldnt be able to find an exact replacement. B. The 40-50mm fans that have been linked are of no use. C. You could send your entire motherboard in I believe, and just get a new fan fitted on it.
Or you could just choose the D option and buy something like this
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...110-103&depa=1
Which would probably fit your motherboard, and cool better than the stock solution did.
I think this is an even better idea:Quote:

I dont know if there are any size constraints though, and that Vantec prodcut is a perfect replacement!
That zalman is good as well though.
Got one of those yesterday :D Going to be mounting it with AS ceramique, I think. Not sure about the paste the included with it.Quote:
