Where do you live- satellite style
Thought this thread by shn was too cool to just let go.
Below is the house I grew up in. It is a 3 story redbrick with a slate-tile roof built in 1906.
The view is of the side door, which is what I used.

Next is a pulled back view.
The "y" shows a large bowl shaped area where we played football. It is a drained pond used in the St. Louis World Fair of 1904.
The circled house, just a block up, is that of Marlon Perkins. Older members may remember him as host of Mutual of Omahas' Wild Kingdom.

Too bad the photos were taken in the winter, but I guess in the summer, all you would see is green treetops.

Re: Where do you live- satellite style
Well....where I'm living doesn't have any entry in that program. Maybe if you want to see a view of the trees and a lake from thousands of feet in the air... ;)
I don't remember the address of the house I grew up in...

Re: Where do you live- satellite style
Shn covered up the road name in her photo, but if you plug in her coordinates you find that she grew up a few hundred miles west of me in Kansas.
Unless you are in a big city or metropolitan area of one, or not in the US, you may not get a great image

Re: Where do you live- satellite style
Or, if you live in Australia like I do, you'll get nothing but a big green blur, even if you reside in the heart of the Sydney CBD.
I still don't see what's so interesting about blurry American rooftops anyway.

If you don't care then don't post. Otherwise you just seem jealous. Just like the first time you said the exact same thing.

Wow... blurry photos of american rooftops.
That's almost interesting...
It is lots of fun and I have only posted the tip of the iceberg.

Re: Where do you live- satellite style
Am I jealous? Or are you arrogant? It's a matter of perspective.
Even if I live in Sydney (Australia's most populated city), as far as the folks in the good ol' USofA are concerned, the entire place is nothing but a huge grass paddock.
What is right with this picture? :frusty:

Primary School centre top. Those white tower blocks are now gone. Demolished last year. :) There are deer in the field just across the river. Very picter skew. :)

Now who's being rediculous? I'm not asking to be pampered, far from it.
The US has satellite images of every landmass on the planet. That is a commonly known fact.
It would be nice for folks in the US to realise there is real geography beyond thier own borders.
Thanks to the USA's huge repository of satellite data, this ideal could be easily accomplished.
It would also be good if the geography was to be depicted accurately.
Why? Because this isn't the first time my part of the world has been misrepresented by US resources.
Case in point: A geography textbook used in Chicago's schools contained a wildly innaccurate picture of the Australian continent.
Nearly all of the western and south coastlines of the Aussie mainland were nothing like the real thing. Tasmania had been completely left out.
The erroneous book was used for nearly 20 years before an Australian teacher working in Chicago discovered and reported the errors.
Does misleading and miseducating students sound like a good idea to you?
Because thats exactly what that satellite pic program is doing.

No, its teaching American students that nothing of any worth exists outside of the USA.

Now, now, now.
Most Americans could not name all 50 states, much less find them on a map, so asking them to be aware of discrepancies in the map of your continent is asking a bit much, don't you think?
To our credit, most Americans are aware that your toilets flush counterclockwise, you ride kangaroos and all your parents were deported English criminals.
Any other pertinent facts we should be aware of?
What the hell am I doing?
It's Sunday.
I should be at Wal-Mart....

Thanks for reminding me.
Rolf Harris is your Minister of Culture.
See?
I know quite a bit about Australia actually.
I'll grab me barbie and leave now...

Well there are a couple of points I feel I should clarify.
1. It was actually my great great great grandparents who were deported English criminals.
It was England's loss too. You get a much better class of thug downunder.
2. We may use kangaroos for sparring partners during boxing practice, but we certainly do not ride them.
3. The toilet flushing thing is correct. But does it really matter in the grand scheme of things?
Oh... and Rolf Harris was actually from the UK.
He just spent his holidays here, and the Brits took every opportunity to deny responsibility. So the legend grew...
