Would i need to reinstall Windows XP Pro O/S to get the hardware configured correctly.... or hook it up and boot with the currently installed copy? Will it automaticly detect and configure? I'm thinkin about addin an Althon XP (already got a 1.2ghz 384mb ram, Gefore video, etc all other hardware compatable)
it should auto matically detect it. There might be a disk for the motherboard and processor which you would need at the first start up
You won't have to reinstall windows at all. Make sure your BIOS revision supports the CPU you intend to install. You might consider it a good time to flash your BIOS before replacing the CPU.
Is'nt the Bios on the motherboard?
I'm going to get an Anthlon XP Mobo+Proccessor deal. (completely compatable)
All I would do i unplug everything off my current mobo includeing the power supply from inside and also a few other wires. I have a current book explaining each part,function,etc on an amd mobo.
btw got n e suggestions about faster proccessors comeing out?

Wolfmight, before changing the mobo you must uninstall the IDE controller. If you don't then Windows won't startup!
Do this by going to Computer Management -> Device Manager -> IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers.
Now choose 'update driver' for the master IDE controller (in you're case probably SIS IDE Controller). Pick 'Generic IDE' (or something like that).
Next shut down the compu and replace the mobo and other stuff. When finished keep you're fingers crossed and start it up again.
If everythings OK let Windows XP do it's magic (can take a while, because it will install all new drivers).

Ah, hmm maybe i should just go with a new CPU only.
Is it easy to swap em out? (like adding RAM?)
I never really understood how you change the *chip*.
Do i have to remove it with special tools etc..?

That's a no-go. At the moment you have an AMD Athlon compatible motherboard.
This is NOT compatible with Intel CPU's.
So you're either stuck to AMD Athlon CPU's or you have to by a new mobo/CPU/ram setup.

Alot of people say AMD makes high end chips so i went with a 2400 2.0ghz (includein the faster fan) for $100. Swell deal cause I saw the same 2400 model 2.0ghz amd cpu at bestbuy, frys, etc for like $200-$300! :D

I'm not sure but I looked around for information about your motherboard Chipset. I think it's limited to 200Mhz front side bus.
Not all boards support 266 front side bus. That means forget the Athlon XP if that is the case.
I'll upgrade mobo too..
hmm would'nt it just run at 200 then? I was useing SiSoft Sandra to get that info.. it might have got that from the proccessor and listed it under motherboard.Quote:

Anyway my understanding is that Sis makes chipsets not motherboards. I could be wrong but is it possible that your board is made by another company and it just uses the Sis chipset?

Can you open your case and look at the board itself and see if you can see a manufactures name and mother board model number?

I find it amazing that I have asked you twice now if you could check that mother board to see what it is. Both times you ignore me. I am beginning to think that you just want to post questions to see if people will answer them without you really needing the help.
