A powmax psu i ordered sparked, can someone help.

I ordered this psu (power supply) from newegg.

I received it today, and once i opened, i tried it in an old computer of mine, and it worked perfectly. Then i thought everything was good. So then i hooked it up on my new pc (my signature). Then it seemed it worked great, but once i turned of the computer i heard a spark from the psu. And now my computer refuses to start with it (but the "ON" light on the psu was on.

So then i hooked up my old powersupply (aspire on that came with my case) , and everything worked perfectly (thank God the harddrive wasnt chipped).

So in conclusion does this mean that the new power supply i bought is defective now, and that i should return it to newegg asap ?

powmax is not a good brand of power supply...we told you to goo with something good. :rolleyes:

Meh, it's probably just defective. That's why it comes with a warranty.

Just last Saturday I saw a very similar situation to F1's unfold.

A kid came in with a brand new system (purchased as parts from an unknown on-line vendor-he had shopped me, but our prices were too high for him) which had only managed to run for about 10 seconds before shutting down.

Turns out, the PSU he had ordered did not come and would not arrive till the following Wed. (today).
Naturally, he could not wait.
pfzzzsssst....
He was understandably concerned.
Mom was understandably miffed.
He ( much like F1) was lucky, a good PSU fired up his system and all the other components are fine.

BUT...he now has a problem.
Because the failed PSU ( also optimistically rated at >500w with the puniest guage wire harness I have ever seen, in fact, the whole unit weighed less than the cardboard box that our replacement Sparkle came in) came bundled with the case, it must be RMAed with the case.
The vendor wants to just give him a whole new unit.

After the kid gets this clusterfuck straightened out ( I sure ain't helpin him...part of what our "high prices" cover is my time/help when problems crop up) then he gets to discover the trick to loading Windows on a SATA drive.

The point here is that he did and you, F1, are about to risk a lot of expensive parts on a substandard, low-rent power supply.
In fact, you're going to do it twice.

Nah, i RMA'ed the cpu back to newegg for a refund lol. Hopefully i'll never come across this powcrap brand again.

A question i have is , is it worth getting a thermaltake powersupply like this http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...153-007&depa=0

If so , with the 12V ampage , would i be able to hit atleast like a 10x270FSB when trying to overclock.


Final question : I got the thermaltake venus heatsink fan and it seems to be working good.

It seems to keep my cpu at a constant 37C , is this normal ?

First of all, you've been told at least half a dozen times that the maximum output of your PSU has very little to do with your ability to overclock your CPU. It is more about the stability of the PSU if it has any bearing on the situation. If the voltage from the PSU varies as you do different tasks (reading a CD/DVD, lots of disk reads for instance) then it is likely that the voltage supplied to your CPU is going to vary too. That's bad news, and it is the sort of thing you get with CHEAP PSU's because they cut the price by sacrificing voltage regulation.

Whether or not you can achieve your desired speeds (I can't remember your CPU) for other reasons, the Thermaltake PSU should certainly have no problem supplying the required current, and at steady voltages too.

Your reported temps sound about normal. You haven't said whether that's at idle or at full load, but as long as there isn't too much change it's about right.

Sounds better than the powmax, but these types of reviews aren't always entirely correct.

Same factory as enermax, which should make it a pretty decent PSU, if the same components are used.

Yes it was ONLY the power supply that crapped out, so im returning it for a refund and hopefully i will be able to find a better on. I didnt go with your recommendation because the 12Vamp of that powersupply was too low for me.

Pretty much, yeah.

Good components weigh more. Heavier, better quality PSUs will probably have bigger and better caps, and more of them as well, and better components in general.

Not by definition, but work this out: components with minimal materials means either not much tolerance, or a lot of work has gone into reducing the weight.

If it is the latter they will be expensive.

So low price + low weight = low tolerance = low quality.

What do the reviews say?
Can you even find any?
As I said before....only good stuff (or potentially good stuff) gets reviewed, so you can assume that if there are no independent reviews available, then it is most likely crap.

You want to hit 10x270?
What are the default speeds of your chip?
If, as I assume, they are 10x200, then reaching 270 might well be impossible unless you have invested in ace RAM and have a motherboard that supports (and provides) overvolting the chip/RAM.
You cooling had better be excellent too, cause that's gonna run hotter than a pistol.

It's just not as easy as saying you wanna.....

Ok, I'll buy that (even though I have no idea who that guy is or what methodology he used to arrive at his recommendations)...at least someone is saying that's a respectable PSU, so fine.
Go for it and good luck.

As far as the overclocking goes...
A64s are not generally thought of as great overclockers.
Especially the s754 chips which have a less than ideal memory controller.
You may have to run your RAM on a divider which could lead to a hit on RAM performance.
Only benching the system will tell.
Simply hitting 2.5 or 2.7GHz means nothing without stability.
If you can run Super Pi or Prime 95 for 24 hrs without errors you should be fine.
Many seemingly stable systems crash out of these tests within minutes.

yeah voltage is a big issue when overclocking amd's. i tried overclocking my xpu with my case's psu (an aspire 350watt with 12v@12A) , i got it up to 2.4ghz but the volatage was 1.73v :x

Not necessarily.
I've read that the Hammer and Winchester cores don't really repond to higher voltages like the Athlons used to.
I think a significant clock ( like you are hoping for) is a far trickier procedure than cranking the old XP was.
For one thing, the BIOS options are confusing (if not hidden) and figuring out what is what takes more energy than I'm willing to spend.

After all, your chip, even at stock speeds, is light years ahead of the majority of PCs in use.
Hell, my new video card has more RAM and processing power than the majority of my customer's CPUs. :crying:

I was able to return it to newegg and recived an 85% refund (they charge 15% restocking fee). Hopefully i may get a new psu in no time..
