If you're using notepad 2 you can set different styles for different file extensions, eg Terminal font for nfo files and a decent font for everything else
And why the fuck would an nfo file be smaller than a txt file? It's exactly the same, just a different file extension!

they were first used back in the day when people had very slow connections and downloading 3kb actually took a while.

Because Notepad is a piece of shit, and for all the nice ASCCI (or whatever it is) art to show up looking good you need a program that will read the spaces as spaces and not delete them.
Look at 15% original post, its quite hard to find the info about the release and stuff, yet Daves post is clear and neat.

The board (or zed/thedave) fooks it a little, but you get the idea.
It looks better in notepad, and it doesn't delete any spaces for me.
I'm not installing software to make something like for example this (random .nfo that hasn't been run through the board) look marginally better
