Gigabyte Brings Solid State Storage to the Mainstream
In an effort to differentiate themselves from other motherboard manufacturers, Gigabyte has introduced a number of interesting add-ons for their motherboards, the most interesting of which is their $50 RAMDISK PCI card.

Re: Gigabyte Brings Solid State Storage to the Mainstream
no shit, the last product that was similar to this and compatible with most motherboards, rather than gigabyte specific motherboards cost at least $400

Re: Gigabyte Brings Solid State Storage to the Mainstream
Gee, would that be the same Gigabyte whose motherboards I have recommending for the past few months?
Why yes indeed, it would be.
I must be psychic.

Re: Gigabyte Brings Solid State Storage to the Mainstream
Too bad about the 16 hours limit. It sounds pretty awesome though.
I wonder if you could put your pagefiles on that
That could be cool if you were using photoshop, which won't work for me without pagefiles, or if you had win2k installed for some reason.
Did you look at the next page?

Forget about the pagefile... How about the whole OS installed on that!

if you didnt use your pc for 16 hours though you would lose windows.
suppose you could probably hook up an external dc power source if needed.

Re: Gigabyte Brings Solid State Storage to the Mainstream
What is the point of this? It would cost a grand to even get 10GBS of space... Why not just buy a SATA HD?

Re: Gigabyte Brings Solid State Storage to the Mainstream
lol
16 hours just sucks
unless u can wire a car battery up to it :P

Well, my PC runs 24/7 so 16 hrs of battery life is not an issue for me.

Speed.

all accesses occur in nanoseconds, not milliseconds and is thus much faster at random accesses than regular hard drives.
You don't really need 10 GBs for the OS.

Oh, so this memory is just for the OS? How would that increase performance?

For one thing, the bootup time would be so fast. Less than 2 seconds.

Re: Gigabyte Brings Solid State Storage to the Mainstream
I can't see the point of the opening line that says the card is just an add-on for Gigabyte motherboards. In fact it even says that no additional drivers are necessary.
But the limiting factor is the SATA interface, so access would not be as fast as you might think.

Re: Gigabyte Brings Solid State Storage to the Mainstream
Step 1....Install RAM drive card w/ 1GB installed
Step2...create custom XP install using nLite (my first attempt yeilded a 950MB XP Pro, I'll be more ruthless next time...bye-bye WMP!
Step3...install stripped OS onto RAM drive
Step4...create Ghost image of OS and store on real HDD
Step5... pwnage and mass adulation
:P

Better with more than 1GB.

Re: Gigabyte Brings Solid State Storage to the Mainstream
yea I would get at least 2gb, cheap ram would be fine, hell you can get 2gb for 150

Unfortunately, expected shipping date won't be until the third quarter http://www.mcbriens.net/liam/img/smilies/kaboom.gif

Re: Gigabyte Brings Solid State Storage to the Mainstream
Seems a little pointless having a setup like that for extra fast booting, for those of us who never reboot.
I think I'd use it for the page file, browser cache and temp files instead.

Wouldn't quick boot times just be icing on the cake?
I would think the whole operation of the OS would be faster also.

Re: Gigabyte Brings Solid State Storage to the Mainstream
but u can't really think that ur comp can stay on forever, can u?
imagine power outage, hardware failures and etc...
putting an OS on it is not really that feasible

Re: Gigabyte Brings Solid State Storage to the Mainstream
It can be done, I dunno' if I'd like having to sort it out, but with a multiboot system or a bootable cd, it'd be easy to copy the os back onto the RAM-drive in case of failure, and then, hopefully, it should just be a matter of rebooting, your bootsector might need a bit of fiddling if you set it up in a multiboot config, but I bet it'd be doable.
If you did lots of changes some kind of scheduled ghosting would be advisable, I suppose.
