You might try out NewsBin Pro. That's the one I use and I think it's the best one to download binaries.
I have been using NewsReactor. Its very easy to use. Check it out here
2nd vote for Newsbin Pro. I use it all the time and I love it.
Is outlook express really shitty ?
If you don't intend to download binaries, then yes, outlook express is fine.
