With what "." extensions are you talking about?
If you mean *.* thats short for "all files" when opening a file.
i mean like .ext/ .mpg / .mp3
A file extension is just a little bit on the end of a file name that tells the operating system what type of file it is, so the operating system knows what program to open the file with (readme.txt has a .txt extension, which is recognised by most OSes as text. Windows opens these files with notepad by default). Extensions are not the only way to identify file type nor are they used to convert one file type to another. If you try to rename .mp3 (music file) to .rtf (rich text format) then MS word will display a load of gibberish.
If you want to know about specific types of extensions (like why .mp3 is different to .wav etc.) then i reccommend Filext.
