LONDON, ENGLAND - Fallout: New Vegas for the PS3, Xbox 360, and PC is being developed by Obsidian Entertainment, formerly Black Isle Studios and developer of Fallout and Fallout 2, and is slated for a 2010 release date.
Details are scarce, but Bethesda said the game is not a sequel to Fallout 3, it's simply another Fallout game in the universe, and has no impact on Bethesda's Todd Howard and his studio's unannounced projects, which may or may not be Fallout related. Bethesda hopes to show the game for the first time later this year, but remained tight lipped on many details. Bethesda did confirm that Fallout: New Vegas will be the same sort of role-playing game as Fallout 3.
During a press conference yesterday in London, Bethesda Softworks announced that they are working with developers Obsidian Entertainment to make the next addition in the Fallout franchise, Fallout New Vegas. Though few details about their new project have been provided, Fallout New Vegas is currently slated for release on the PC, Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 sometime in 2010.
Though Fallout New Vegas retains the same game play elements typical of past Fallout games, Bethesda has stated that it will not be a sequel to last year’s Fallout 3. They also mentioned that despite the fact that Obsidian has assumed the duties of developer for Fallout New Vegas, fans can “expect the same type of game [as Fallout 3].”
“It is not a sequel to Fallout 3.” said Pete Hines, Bethesda’s marketing and public relations VP. “It’s not Fallout Tactics—it’s not Brotherhood Of Steel. It’s another Fallout game. It has no impact on what [Bethesda Game Studios game director] Todd Howard and his guys are planning.”
Details about Bethesda’s and Obsidian’s joint venture are sparse until Obsidian decides to disclose additional information, but in the meanwhile, Bethesda tells gamers that they can “make educated guesses” about what they can expect from Fallout New Vegas. Seeing how Fallout 3 allowed gamers to explore the post-apocalyptic wastelands of Washington D.C, it makes sense that in New Vegas will be set in the ruins of the famous Las Vegas strip.
Bethesda Softworks were the developers of Fallout 3, which was released in October 2008 to widespread critical acclaim. Bethesda revamped the Fallout franchise from being a tactical role-playing game to a unique hybrid of first-person shooting and role-playing elements.
Fallout 3 was awarded Best Writing and Game of the Year at the 9th Annual Game Developer’s Choice Awards in March 2009. Additionally, Fallout was declared Game of the Year by a number of other publications, including Game Spy, Game Fly and IGN.
Obsidian Entertainment is comprised of members of Interplay’s Black Isle Studios. Black Isle were the developers of Fallout and Fallout 2 for the PC, but the studio was shut down in December 2003. Since its formation, Obsidian has worked primarily on sequels to Bioware franchises, including Star Wars: Knight of the Old Republic II and Neverwinter Nights 2. Additionally, they are working on a third person action RPG, Alpha Protocol, which is coming to home consoles and PC in Fall 2009.
Recently, Bethesda Softworks has also filed a trademark for the Fallout brand that encompasses both television and films.
Our Take:
Despite being competent developers, Obsidian Entertainment is somewhat notorious for making sequels to games, made by other developers, that fail to live up to their predecessors. Even still, they should be the best acquainted with the series since they are technically are responsible for creating it. It’s hard to determine for sure, though, until more details become available.
