Re: can I use newsgroups?
The restricition is on filesize and not downloaded amount?
Re: can I use newsgroups?
Usually newshosts offer an alternate port to connect to. Check their faqs before joining one.
Filesize wont be a much of a factor. Most groups have a max filesize. If they dont, most thing are uploaded in parts (usually 15 MB pieces for tv shows).
Re: can I use newsgroups?
I thought that I would add that the default port of usenet is 80.
If the proxy is optional, there should be no need for it.

Default differs from host to host. I have giganews. They use 119 for the main port.
Re: can I use newsgroups?
I stand corrected.
I have Power Usenet.
Their default port is 119 also, but also can use 80 and 23.
Re: can I use newsgroups?
Most, if not, all will have port 80 available to connect on. So that and filesize will be no problem.
Have fun.

yes most universities make you connect through a squid proxy cache server. this saves them having to download all the files from popular sites for every user and allows control of what is downlaoded.
have a look in internet explorer for the address of the proxy server and use these.
might be worth going to www.ipchicken and looking up who your uni's isp is. then try a decent newsreader to see what kinda newsgroup access you have from uni and if it works properly before you pay for a server.
As far is i know port 119 is the port used by your newsgroup server. as long as your system admin hasn't got port 119 as a destination port blocked in his firewall setting you can use any port you like to connect.
