I haven't had a problem until now, but when I set up an avi source video in virtualdub to extract the audio (set audio to full processing, with no compression and 48000Hz sampling rate), I always get this error message when I go to save WAV: "no audio decompressor could be found to decompress the source audio format".
I have never ran into this problem before with other avi videos. Am I missing a codec or what? Can any one throw me a hand?

just a guess, but maybe you are missing AC3 audio codec

Check the file info if the sound say's unknown(tag2000) its in AC3 I used Avi2Vcd then Audio Decompress I think Besweet does it too anyways Avi2Vcd is here.

thanks for the help. I decompressed the audio with the avi2vcd decompresseor and everything went smoothly from there.
