What software to use for iphone to work in Canada... anyone?

Got the iphone and it worked fine but after a few days it just stopped working (black screen).

My friend programmed it before and it worked (when I first got it) but he went away to school and got pretty busy.

Does anyone know of any guides and/or apps, firmware that I can use to get the iphone to work in Canada

You could get someone to properly unlock it, there are plenty of ads on craigslist.
