most DDR RAM motherboards run DDR on a single channel. dual channel is a type of memory controller pushed primarily by nvidia, not a type of RAM.
as far as i know, it's not BIOS options that enable dual channel, but the way you arrange the identical RAM sticks in the slots. if they're not identical, you don't get dual channel... if they're not in the correct slots, you don't get dual channel.
there should be a page in the motherboard manual that explains how to physically arrange the RAM to enable dual channel.
Hey..so is Double data alot faster? i would think slower cuz it has to acces 2 sticks..but i know its supposed to be faster...neone know how that works?..thanx brainiac that helped me understand it :)
DDR is twice the speed of SDRAM running on the same bus speed. theoretically, at least.
dual channel is supposed to be faster than single channel because the computer can split tasks more evenly between the two RAM sticks... it has more bandwidth. but the exact increase in bandwidth isn't really known, and it's definitely less than nvidia claimed it would be. maybe future versions of dual channel memory controllers will start to live up to the hype... who knows.
Dual channel memory greatly increases performance. For example, my computer transfers data at peak 6.4 GB per second. That is more than a DVD worth of data per second. That ceiling is cut in half with single channel memory.
