I went to the dentist today for a cleaning.
I was tended by a hygienist I hadn't seen before, but I guess my point in posting this is that she hadn't seen me before.
To preface:
The dentist is a good friend of mine, and has been for years; my step-daughter worked for him for several years, and my step-son's wife has worked there for about six years.
For what it's worth, I have - luckily, I guess - never had a hygienist who was less than gorgeous; I've spent much more time than the average Joe in a dentist's chair, and looking at these creatures up close has been a nice distraction in an otherwise uncomfortable situation.
Anyway, I've bantered with hygienists forever, and been entertained every time - I usually begin by asking what it's like to be up-close all day with people who are doing everything they can to avoid eye-contact from less-than-a-foot away, or, who are checking out every feature they can see.
A few of them engage on the subject, and have given it enough thought to converse about it - most, however, seem not to have considered it too deeply, but are willing to speculate.
Today's candidate was distinctly distant, even a bit chilly...I was doping out an opening line while she was working, and the first time she withdrew, I asked if she'd ever had anyone complain she was blocking their view of the ceiling.
She couldn't - especially as a pretty blonde - hide her immediately-flushed face, and after about fifteen seconds of silence, she managed to give me a pretty good jab with her instrument, and came in pretty quick with the rinse-and-suck.
She apologized for her clumsiness, and I apologized for offending her - at which point she cupped my cheek and got all teary-eyed.
I felt so fucking bad.
Anyway, when the Doc came in for the once-over, he sensed something, asked us if everything was okay, and I said "yeah, we were just talking politics".
