A shotgun or any projectile weapon is only good until it's ammo runs out. What you need to do is to find yourself a good pike before there's a run on them. With a pike you'll always have the reach advantage.
Also a dog is better than dog food. They act as an early warning system and in a pinch you can still eat them.
